Arizona Chickens

Well, the winds suck but the ladies and the turkeys don't seem to notice. Still haven't updated the paint on the coop yet though. Too lazy.  Can't wait for the wind to mellow out. Finally dusted all the ladies and turkeys in DE. Boy is that a mess. I ended getting a small bag over at Tucson OK feed. Sadly, as for feed they only had Purina products.  As for side projects, I am making a large container of ACV with Mother inside. I took a large Kroger acv and added a braggs to innoculate it with. Stuff works wonders.;)

We're using the grow feed from OK. 50# bag doesn't have anything on it that says purina. It says Onate feed co, Albuquerque.
The girls like it.

I've been in and out of the heat and wind today giving chickens baths, getting them ready for the show on Saturday (May 18th). At least they dry fast today! The Tucson Poultry, Pigeon and Fancy Fowl Club (that is a mouthful) is having our Spring Show, to be held/hosted by the Arizona Feeds Country Store on 4743 N. Highway Dr. (just off I-10 at Ruthrauff). Judging is after 9 am Coop-In, will be over by around 2 pm. Open to members and non-members. Exhibitors may have birds for sale. Come on over and enjoy the show!

Bummer I'm already busy that day. I would like to check that out.

You are such an enabler....

What color silkies you got cooking? AM I going to want some new silkies????

Silkie ducks are very pretty. Just tell the fireman that the ducks taught the silkies to quack! He'll buy that, right?

My daughter turned on the chicken mister after school (about 3 hours before I got home). SHe turned the water full blast and never checked it. Well, the irrigation hose popped a joint and flooded the run area. When I got home, the girls were standing in about 2 inches of water and squawking about it.
We had a lesson in how to only crack the water open and check on it often.

That is SO something my daughters would do, so we are putting the ball valve out of their reach! Except that all of my clan seems to love the water. Once a week, I flood irrigate the yard and they are prancing around in the water the entire day. That is the single best way to keep them off my back porch, to be honest! I'm in the process of putting in a mister for the porch, but my wife talked me out of putting it low enough for the chickens. It's comical to watch them come running across the yard when it's flooded. They leave a trail that looks like a rock skipping across the water.

I think PastryMama is who we got our Silkies from and they are excellent specimens. I say it that way because I do not like the looks of Silkies at all, but I can admit that they are fine creatures. I don't know the specifics in terms of show quality, but I would guess these are up there. We got a partridge, splash and white.

OK Feed carries a number of poultry feed products, including a line of organic feed from Modesto Milling. It comes in 50 lb bags. They keep it out back in the barn, so you have to ask for it at the counter. I bought 100 lbs of organic layer feed there a couple of months ago. It was definitely not Purina.

Edited to add that OK Feed has more than one store, and their stock may be different. I'm talking about the store in central Tucson, at Fort Lowell and Dodge.

Pastrymama does have very fine looking silkies. I have some of hers. I just need some new colors to add to my assortment. I like the bearded ones with big dandelion heads.
My partridge started laying eggs last week. Tiny little eggs. My buff is squatting and my white is a few weeks younger so will see how soon she squats.

Well, IT has arrived.

104 here today, but I still climbed the mountain after work... pool water temp has increased from 74 to 78 in just one week. Not quite as "refreshing" but nice nonetheless.

My other Olive Egger (3/4 blue wheaten Ameraucana:1/4 Wheaten Marans) is still broody and I'll put the chicks that hatch under her on Saturday. I still have 25 in the Brinsea, but Wednesday at lunch I go into "lockdown" so I'll up the humidity to 63% and take it off of the turner. (after I candle of course)

I have 11 Aloha eggs as well as various Marans and Blue egg layers and cochins.

I started counting birds from my McMurray's "Duke's Mixture"... That hatched March 23rd.

I have a goodly number of roos.

1 Buff orp Roo.
1 American Game roo.
1 BBRed roo
Another roo that could be a Speckled Sussex.
I have a pair of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes.
I have a pair of Sultans.
I have six Columbian Wyandottes... 2 roos and 4 pullets.
I have four partridge Rocks, 2 roos, 2 pullets
I have a Giant Partridge Cochin roo.
I have 3 Silver Spangled Hamburgs, a roo and 2 pullets. I'll probably sell a pair and keep one of the pullets.
I have 8 Silver Laced Cochins... looks like a 50/50 mix of pullets and cockerels.
I have 5 Australorps. at least 2 are roos.
I have 3 splash Cochins... 2 roos and a pullet
I have 4 black Cochins... looks like 1 roo and 3 pullets.
I have one Lakenvelder pullet. (I had another roo and pullet but they passed)
I have one that I have no clue about... it's almost two months old and has NO FEATHERS, I call it UGLY.... just blue/gray fuzz.
and at least 3 or 4 others that I don't have any clue what they are two could be Light brown leghorn pullets.

Saturday or next Wednesday I've got to sell or rehome at least 22 of those roos. I'm keeping the BLRW roo and giving the pair to Boston so he can breed them.

And I've got to sell all of the pullets but one of each breed... I'll probably Craig's list them and see what I can do. I want to get down to 10 pullets from that group of 48! I can't afford to feed them anymore... they eat like pigs!

So the chicken math addiction continues.

Tonight I sat in an easy chair in the grow out pen where my Blue Copper Olive Egger is raising 12 of Kathy's Dellies along with the SLW. I am amazed at how fast they are growing... how LONG and WIDE bodied they are. AMAZING. Two of the Dellies are in my Laree brooder with "Milagro", my Blue Naked Neck from Jody. (SCG)
Also, I THOUGHT, I was going to have to cull one of the Dellies because for over a week, it just hopped around on one leg and had ZERO use of it's left leg. Well, I'm glad I didn't cull it because it's working and growing now... but that leg is just a tad smaller than the other one.

OK, I've bored you all to tears, but if you needed to go to sleep, this may have been your medicine.

Man, you've got your hands full right now...about like I was back in Jan/Feb..Congrats on all your new cuties and 1 UGLY. Could you take pics of that one? Might be amusing to guess it's breed (s)...

I am not a fan of "IT"... Summer here is like other states' winters...instead of staying inside dreaming of Spring...I stay inside dreaming of late Fall....I am out from 7-10am doing morning 'chores' in my yard/garden and coop/yard...then for a bit from 7-8pm unless I am in the pool that is. I have hatching fever since it's been almost 3 months but I do not dare with his prohibitive heat...I would be swearing at myself and what's worse, my DH might start <wink>.

I guess that's just another reason for dreaming of Fall

Omg! At least it was a hot day so they probably didn't hate the water completely.
