Arizona Chickens

Let me know if you find any chicks. It's such a bad time of year to be broody.

I feel so bad for her. I got 4 broodies this spring so we have a few babies. The third is still broody but I'm having success getting her off the nest. The 4th is absolutely determined. I figured if I could give her some babies she could get off the nest and out of the coop where there's some airflow.

I also have two broodies, a gorgeous porcelain silkie that is maybe 9 months old and has laid oh IDK, like 3 eggs!!!!!!!!!!! the other is a mottled basque hen at 7 months old. the last thing I need is more chicks! I can't seem to sell the ones I have, I need more like I need another stupid beagle.

A few pictures of some of my chickens.

The first broody of the year, and her chick. The chick is a EE I hatched from eggs I got from Mary Hysong. Mama is a Barnvelder/California White cross.

This is the Splash Ameraucana that I got from Mahonri. When I got it, both of us were confident it was a pullet, but as time goes on I'm starting to think roo. What do you guys think?

The Blue Marans I got from Mahonri, and the chicks she hatched (after she kicked the Olive Egger who had been sitting on them off the nest) 3 of the chicks are Alohas, the other 3 are Aloha/Silver Laced Brahma crosses.

Another picture of the Ameraucana that is making me nervous.

What's going on with all the broodies in this heat? I spoke to cbnovak and she think my eggs didn't hatch because its so darned hot! Kinda gross really...

Interesting to hear so many people with broodys. One of my tiny chickens (not sure what she is maybe I will post a picture to see if anyone here has a clue) decided to go broody and I went ahead and let her have some tiny eggs since I could not break her. Candled them yesterday and they are all growing (just three of them).
I have another hen hat is hiding eggs in a corner of the coop, she has always laid in the nest box. She had better not be planning on going broody. My husband is going to kill me if we have anymore babies.

Yeah, it's like broodiness is in the air. Two of my five adult girls are broody.

Crazy birds.

So this is my little hen that has gone broody and is sitting on three of her own eggs-we picked up three chicks back in the fall and you can see the other hen in the background. I needed some companions for a banty single chick and I thought these were 3 week old banty chicks but now realize that they were older than I thought. Anyone have any ideas on what they are?

This is the same hen but with the third chick I had picked up that turned out to be a roo. OK so we really should not have him but he is so little that he is not that loud when he crows (you can barely hear him in the front yard when he is in he coop)

To give you an idea of how small she is that is her next to my cochin hen. We have some RIR chicks from Hippie Chicks that are 5 weeks old and are as big as the hen.
So any ideas on what they could be??
Picked them up from OK Feeds back in late fall-really didn't care about the breed at the time as I needed friends for a single chick that lost its momma. But I would love to know if anyone has any ideas...

I have a broody BA too. I never had one before this year. Is she going to survive this heat? I take her off the nest a couple of times in the hottest part of the day and put her in the wading water to cool down. She usually eats then before she goes back to the nest box. My daughter is getting ready to go away to camp so she wants me to wait for her to get back and then give her chicks if she is still broody. Of course if we get more chicks we'll have to expand the coops. I guess we are destined to have our legal limit of 25 hens eventually.
