Arizona Chickens

I know I'm breaking all the rules by letting a broody raise little chicks in the pen with all the other hens, but it's working out well. Plus, I don't have a separate pen available right now. Between the mama hen and the rooster, my other hens have been forced to stay in the coop when the chicks are out. I had to put another waterer in the coop and increase the free ranging time for the poor girls!
I always let my broodys raise the chicks with the flock. This makes it so much easier when they are independent as they are seen as part of the flock. A broody hen is pretty good at keeping others away from her chicks-glad to see your rooster is helping with chick duty, mine do that too.
Enjoy your broody and her babies--it is lots of fun to watch them and so much easier than raising them yourself

It is going to be 117 on Friday. I am really afraid for my chickens! I am going to put an extra mister on a hose in the cage for them just to help out. I have fans blowing through the mist also. Anyone have other good ideas? I may put an ice block out there. I have not done that as of yet.

I keep shallow pans filled with water and it has a brick in it for them to stand on. They really like to stand in the water or walk through it during the day. I have heard that the brick stays cool and when they stand on it they cool off their feet. Although I have a couple that will plop down in the pans.
I did have a cochin that got overheated the other day (can't imagine why with all those feathers

). I turned on the water and made a water hole/mud hole and put her in it and she stayed in it for quite some time and cooled off and was fine. Talked to our vet about it and he said that was a good way to cool her down.

If you raise your chickens organically, though you would have to use your own replacement cost... either cost of chicks plus how much it would cost to raise chicks to laying age on organic feed, or how much you will lose in egg production while new chicks are growing out.
All sounds well and good, but not nearly as easily verifiable as already set prices. Start talking all of that to the police and their eyes will glaze over. I'm not saying that the birds are not worth more. They might be. Proving it is another matter.

I too have an A/C unit in the coop. I keep it at 82 so it is comfortable for them while laying eggs. we have misters in the runs and two containers with ice water for them to soak their tootsies. Daphne loves her foot soak. This is a planter saucer and the other is a under the bed plastic container that 4 girls can hang out in.
Wow, your coop and run look Awesome!

I have a few birds I'd like to sell. I'll try here before Craigslist. These are all 8 week olds, hatched April 25, 2013. My rooster is a Black Orpington/Barnevelder mix. As for hens, I have Wheaten Ameraucanas, Blue Marans, Production Red, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandotte and an Olive Egger. So these chicks are a mix of my roo and any one of my hens. I'm not totally sure of the mothers of each, but I included my best guesses. Feel free to add your expert input! I am asking $5 for the cockerels, $10 for the pullet. I'll have more later, but am waiting a bit for those. Thanks!

Cockerel, obviously from my Blue Marans

Pullet: Looks like from my Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.

Cockerel: I'm guessing from my Wheaten Ameraucans, as they are the only whiteish hens I have. But with the barring, he could be from my olive egger.

Super cute mixed pullets and cockerels!!! They'll have lots of hybrid vigor for sure.
