Arizona Chickens

:barnie my new little pullets tried to go in the new coop. They were chased out. 6 of my original 8 have moved into roosting the new coop. I put them in the old coop with the 2 girls that were in the. Old coop. I will give it time. :fl they are young yet are accepted on the fringe but not really part of the flock. Still have the baby chirp. When they grow up I think it will be different.

Are your cochins sort of sassy and a little stuck up? Or is it just mine, lol. She hates me. The only time I can pet her is when she's in the roost at night.
^^THIS. 100% I really think they believe they are the queens of the coop.

Did your cochins take longer to crow too? I have a blue cochin who doesn't act like a cockerel at all but everyone says it's definitely a cockerel. He's 18 weeks.
IMO, Cochins take a bit more time than other breeds. It's worth the wait since I don't like being woken up for any reason, let alone a cockeral finding his voice lol.

The brown egg layer pullets I ordered from Meyer are all spoken for. Still PM me if your interested, you never know if someone will backdown. I'm thinking of doing an order through Welp Hatchery for a few rare breeds. I don't meet the min order of 25. If anyone wants to jump on that let me know!

Hi!!! I am in Casa Grande, Az. We are pretty much neighbors - Lol.
I have 23 chickens of different ages and was also worried about the intense heat here. I solved the problem/s by making sure that they have A LOT of tarps up for shade; I watched the sun (as it shined in my backyard) to make sure of where it is most intense in the daytime - that way I knew where & how to place my tarps ($3.00 for 6' x 8'-s at Big Lots! A great deal, eh?) I then got a mister for them and have that on during the hottest part of the day. (Be careful with that though because if the ground gets to wet - for to long - it will start to smell. (For odor problems use Sweet PTZ - I think that's how you spell it - might be a 'D' and not a 'T'? Lol )
Also, make sure the chickens have pans of water to put their feet in! That is VERY important to keep them cool!
So far my chickens are staying cool enough to be still laying eggs!
(Supposedly chickens don't lay when it's hot...)
I think you'll be fine if you are attentive to keeping them cool.
God bless you and your chickens "Arizona Chickens"! Keep smiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol.
your fellow chicken lover,
Chisandchicks (stands for "Chihuahuas and chickens" - lol)

Brilliant idea if you've got an irrigation system.

I removed a dead bush that was being watered by my drip system and used the already present water line to make a daily auto-filler for the chickens water bowl. It's one of those bottle fed automatic water bowls that look like a mini water delivery bottle.

With a small drill I made a hole in the bottle, inserted the black water tube and, Yatzee! the water takes care of its self now.

I still have to scrub out the bowl every couple days cuz in this heat the algae grows quick. But it's been great!

If you don't have an extra line coming from your drip system, you can add one (any length you need!) by tapping into your existing line with 5 bucks worth of supplies from Home Depot.

"When will I get some eggs!?"

Just throwing this out there for those in the yarn ell area.....I have an extra stall for livestock that I will donate for 1 month to an animal in need of housing. Can house a few goats, a horse, a cow or? You will have to pay for feed, but the space is available for free with auto waterer and shade, and turnout. Just trying to think outside the box on how me and my family can help during these tough times. Also, I have an unused coop area to house 6 to 8 chickens if needed as well.

Like a commune ....

Communes do not work, community's do and co-ops. A semi-commune. Will what are we waiting for? The grim reaper? I'm in. I hope to sell my house myself, buy land, build a house, of my design. It may have to be very small, I hope to put in solar and if there is water a well. Realistically it will be solar or well not both. No one is going to hand me the money any time some. Each buy 2 or 3 acres, join the land and manage it. Set the community agenda, and all the other details. Very do able. We all have a lot to offer. In truth, it is hard to get the vision out of your mind. It would be hard work, organization, and communication. With all that I still would love it.

I'm looking at Wittman, a nice compromise, doctors, hospitals, and stores not that far. Still open land, still Possable to get 40 or 50 acres in one piece west of Wittman. There is a problem for kids, in a community they can't get away with anything.
