Arizona Chickens

Sonoran I did PM you with a question..

Here it is for ya all... It is what I had thought anyway,
Two broody hens, hatch date sat- today... At first there was about 9 eggs.
I took 4 out.. Then a few weeks later I checked and there are 12 eggs..
Yesterday in the morning I checked for pipping. One egg had been broken. All I could see
was the thick white membrane, no movement I thought dud.. Then last night I checked again
there was movement, this morning it was gone.. They or someone must of eaten it.. Now another
one is the same.. I really don't think any will hatch with that heat wave that came threw..
So anyway, what do ya all think??

I got 2 barred rocks & 1 mystery chick from redrockrooster.. To put under the two broody's this evening...
Can't wait to see how that goes... Thank you for ordering those chicks...
If the hen has been setting properly, they actually keep the eggs cooler than the air temp, and yes, they can be fertile and hatch. If they get off for longer periods of time, or they have been out getting baked too much before she starts setting, they will probably be duds.

If you see thick white membrane, you need to help the chick out. There wasn't enough humidity, and the chick is getting shrink-wrapped, and not able to get out. All it may take is gently poking through the membrane and giving the baby a starting place.

Do you have a picture of the chicks that you hatched from TJ eggs?

I'm sure it's variable, but to what extent does your most skilled roo participate? E.g., does he help regulate the temperature of young chicks by letting them get under him and in his feathers? What other things does he do? I find this totally fascinating.

Greetings!

I am new to this forum and am enjoying reading all the postings. I recently built a coop and run and filled it with 7 one year old chickens. They seem to be handling the heat quite well with a mister and small kiddie pool filled by the mister. I am currently getting an average of three eggs a day. some days more some days fewer with the bulk coming from my two americaunas.

Someone left this for me to find way in back of the nest box. It is the oddest egg I have gotten from my girls. It is very hard everywhere except at the end where the "stringy" stuff is.

Guess What?........

You guessed right!!!
