Arizona Chickens

Oh he is so cute. unfortunately you are to far away for me. I am in Surprise. I wouldn't be able to kill him either. I would just get him a mate to keep him happy. I am looking for a female for my crested blue polish. his gal was snatched from him by a coyote. That will never happen again. My dog will make sure of that. Good luck homing the little guy. He is too cute so I am sure you will find someone who wants him.

I seem to be in a bit of a pickle. When I got my polish from the breeder I knew it was a straight run, but she agreed to take them back if they ended up not being hens. She took back the first one, and said she'd take back the 2nd one, buuut is no longer responding. I saw her in the store when we were picking up chicken feed (she works there), and asked her about it. I'm just not quite willing to stalk someone in order to give back a chicken. I don't even want a refund. She promised to contact me that evening after she found a place to put him... That was on the 19th. I txtd her on the 21st again, but nothing. This has been going on since the 15th. Turns out she ended up with a lot of Polish boys instead of girls. I understand this is a bummer, but I absolutely cannot have a rooster. At any rate since I'm getting more or less ignored and provided with no ETA for taking him back I'm thinking I need to find an alternate option. I don't want $$ for him, I just need him rehomed. Any chance anyone would like a Polish Buff rooster? He's never been aggressive. Of course it takes a plan and some skills with dodging to catch him since he's a super jumpy chicken, but I would really prefer he go to a home that will either keep him or eat him. I just can't bring myself to kill him. He's a pet. I'm a wus. His name is PotPie (Pie for short), I think he's attempting to embody David Bowie with his hairdo. He hasn't started crowing, but he is showing a little too much interest in Peep. She's having none of it. I figure it's a matter of time until the crowing starts. Here are a couple pics of him. I can try to get some better pics of him too. I'm in Maricopa, but am not against putting him in a pet carrier and bringing him to the Chandler area if it means a home.
He is quite handsome ;) hope he finds a great new home.

It seems like everything likes figs. You're right, it's a battle against time to get them before the birds and bugs. In the past three days or so Japanese beetles have been showing up. Fortunately, they cluster on very specific figs. I think that a female finds a ripe fig to eat and then males are attracted to her pheromones. The clustering makes it quite easy to gather up 50 or more in a single swoop with a jar and lid. The chickens are loving them!

Those fig beetles can't get into my covered garden. They can't seem to fit their big bodies through 1/2" aviary wire, which covers my garden

June bugs (at least the ones I grew up with) are very different. Larger and solid brown, not partially green, Googling came up with some interesting results: http://thedragonflywoman.com/2011/06/14/what-is-a-june-bug/ and here is what is a june bug to me: THey would always gather near lights and night in large groups and fly about.

Ya I'm finding out more and more how wrong all the childhood names we had for things were. Your picture looks like the ones that fly around my porch light each night. They aren't very big though, size of a dime maybe.

Ha! only problem is it would be all skin and bones. Plus most of all the drama would disappear. You thought chicken TV was entertaining........

Hmm... A good broth or stock, then? And drama, that I can do without! I graduated high school years ago and do not miss it. I hate when we get all these young kids at work nowadays. Their sense of entitlement and lack of work ethics...

Hi Everyone,
I will be new to chickens. I have been doing research, reading books and dropping in here for the last year...yes, I have been waiting THAT long! We are closing on a house at the end of the month which is on half an acre in Mesa, AZ and the first thing I want to do is bring home some chicks.
I already have coop plans and am purchasing materials to get it made.

My questions are:
1. I am considering Brahma, Ameraucana, Delaware, Naked Neck, & Buff Orpinton's. I am looking for good layers that are heat hardy and will be docile and calm with my 5 children....am I headed in the right direction?
2. I would much rather buy from a breeder than a hatchery and was looking for recommendations in the phoenix area (I would be willing to travel 1+ hours).

Anything else I should know?
Thanks!!!

Personally I would nix the Brahma. Don't have any experience with them, but they are HUGE birds and the bigger breeds generally do not do as well in the heat.
My recommendation is if you want a local breeder, then find someone who is breeding to the show standard and is not breeding hatchery stock. Check out the Large Heritage Fowl Thread and you will be won over to heritage birds. It costs just as much to raise a good bird as it does a poor one. JMO and
