Arizona Chickens

Well we have officially been given the chickens we were chick "sitting". Apparently her landlord said absolutely NO on chickens in the backyard. We have gone from 4 to 8 BYC's. My kids are sooo excited. Not sure why cuz Momma farmer is the one who takes care of them all. I'm excited too. Now we will be getting eggs from 8 chickens. Now to incorporate them into one coop eventually. Husband is already planning and laying out the new coop.

Oh !! I forgot to ask.... Does anyone have an idea when pullets start laying eggs?

It really depends on breed and the time of year they mature. Generally, around 7+ months, although some take considerably longer. Look for reddened comb and wattles and "squatting". She'll literally squat down when you reach down to pet her. Those are tell-tale signs of maturity and you'll see eggs soon!

I finally found a good home for my older Royal Palm tom. She drove all the way down from N. Mesa to get him.

Yep, that buttercup is a boy for sure. I have photos in my gallery of my buttercup roo around the same age/stage as yours. Mine is developing into a very beautiful roo (he's 16 weeks old now, has been crowing for a few weeks, and just started attempting to mate my 19-week old pullets).

Thanks! Yup, definately a boy. I got mine at Pet Food Depot. It's the only time I have purchased chicks from a feed store. I have the pullet and two red pullets. They said Rhode Island Red, but I'm sure they are Production Reds! They were all suppose to be pullets. Is yours breeder or hatchery stock? I guess I could incubate some eggs when they are old enough, but I'm not sure there'd be a market so sell them.

I haven't heard of Pet Food Depot before. So far 1 of the 4 you got there were sexed wrong? I think I had good luck with Western Ranchman just off of Bell. I got 4 there and we think they are all girls. 1 is a sex link so they can't really mess that one up but the other 3 look like they're headed in the right direction too. Combs, coloring etc all point to female. One of mine was sold as RIR as well but i'm assuming PR. She's pretty dark in color but not as dark as heritage ones I've seen.

It's been so stressful on me praying they ended up to be girls. I think when I add a couple more chickens in the future I'll get pullets from a breeder. I liked raising from tiny chicks but now that I've done it once I don't think I need to do it again, I'd rather get started pullets so I don't have the hoping and praying they're not rooster stress.
