Arizona Chickens

And the chicks were just placed under the broody. She wasn't too upset about it, although she did peck me a few times. It seems all quite for now. In the meantime, it's time for bed and we'll see how they're doing in the morning.

Amazing how a hen obviously sees you replace her eggs with live chicks because she is pecking you while you do the switch, but she accepts that she hatched them and protects them as her own by morning.

Yeah, well apparently, my girl is too smart for her own good. She's rejecting this batch also. They slept fine, but once daylight came, she'd had enough. She pecks at them if they get too near. Although she doesn't fluff up or peck at me.

That or she's racist. I got Production Reds and she's a Birchen Marans. Their brown fluff just isn't good enough for her black feathers. They must be from across the river. East siders, you know? Rofl!

I may have my wife stick a half dozen eggs under her tomorrow. I don't know if they're fertile, though, despite my boys' best attempts.

Time to leave for my business trip, though. It's in my wife's hands now. See you all later.

It took my broodies a couple of days to fully accept the chicks I gave them. They would peck at the chicks, but nothing bad. It was like they were just TOLERATING them. I'd go out and give the chicks food and water, but eventually the hens took over. I have also had hens accept chicks immediately, midday. Then again I've had hens who acted like i threw firecrackers at them. And one hen killed a chick that hatched late but accepted the others that hatched with no problem. How long has your girl been broody? Maybe she needs to sit longer before she is convinced her eggs hatched. Idunno...they are all so different.

ROFL! Well maybe your wife will have the motherly touch to pass on to your hen.

Got a decent shot of an Alpha cockerel (5 1/2 months) I hatched in Feb. this year. He is a New Hampshire cross of german/american strains. He's got alot more filling out to do, but I am pleased with his development thus far. Very docile boy too. Demosthine has a trio of these birds as well.

Beautiful bird!!
