Arizona Chickens

X 2...higher protein is great for birds' adult plumage too. If you don't think they are getting alot of bugs whilst free ranging I would supplement with dried meal worms....birds are omnivores not vegetarians. Unfortunately, most feeds today do not contain anymore animal protein.

Thanks ladies. Mine get lots of bugs with their new 'Chunnel' that goes around my garden area. They catch the grasshoppers that flee from me when I am working in the garden and I give them any tomato worms I find too. Was giving them live mealworms but they have all turned to bottles, so I'm waiting on baby worms now. I also take them all the crickets I catch in the house! I get so many of them during monsoon season. Does it hurt them to stay on grower instead of all flock? I don't want overweight chickens, lol.

My Grandmother S (this side of family has been here sense late 1700's) has told me many stories about her life and t he world she grow up in. They had a chicken her dad kept around for many years. She was a Moma hen who's mission in life was to be a Moma. She stole eggs, take over nests, steel baby chicks, ducklings, goslings, and kittens (if she could). She didn't even have to set on eggs to try to take custody of chicks. Her dad used her as an Living Incubator. the kittens ended up in joint custody with one of their farm cats. I have no idea what kind it was, what ever was popular in Kansas I guess. Otherwise all the chickens and Roos eventually went into the pot before they got to old. She had to have been a very fierce hen. When she had ducklings and goslings she would go wild when they took to water and swam away. She just couldn't figure it out, her chicks will drawn...... But they didn't.

Oh sweet, I love it.. Old times.

Can anyone tell me how you wash a chicken? Do you blow dry and fluff? Use a feather conditioner? And one of my fluffy big girls, my black sex link has a dirty white bute, I heard some people trim those feathers. How much do you trim? She is very fluffy back there and it seems t filter everything. Thanks

And than you for the positive ID on the bug. I did not know if it was 1/4" or 3" by the picture. I too have never seen the wing stage, I have the grub stage, but didn't know it"

DH processed our first chicken today. My 5 year old and my 6 year old helped. It'll go in the crock pot tomorrow. Any suggestions on how to cook it? It was a 3 1/2 month old cockerel, I hope it's not too tough.
