Im trying to avoid buying from a hatchery. I'm looking for black australorps. Does anyone sell this breed or know of a breeder here in AZ. I searched the forum found one breeder near Tucson, clicked their facebook and they haven't been on in almost two years... I messaged them any way but I'm not expecting a reply. They also had a link to BYC with their member name... I searched and they no longer exist on BYC. Can anyone help or give me a page number in this thread to start from? 1290 pages is a lot of reading.

Yes, his skin was black...well, more like dark grey. His meat is darker as well. Here he is in his reduced glory (before rinse off, ignore that fleck of blood).

Thanks for the incubator advice. I had only $75.00 in my budget.... Going to have to rework it.

I'm addicted. . . Now I find Icbar, good layer, looks great, and friendly....... IS THERE NO END?. I feel so defeated. . . . So many wonderful chicks, so little space and money. . . . I just can not go on eBay and look at chickens. I wonder if there is a support group "Chickens Buying Anonymous".

Silkie meat has its own taste and texture. Roasted a little tuff, in a soup wonderful. Some call it gamey, I call it TASTING LIKE A SILKY, look up recipes for silkie, I like Tamarind in my soup. What ever you do it will be delicious, keep you mind and taste buds open with no expectations of what you expect it to taste like. That's the way I try all new foods.

Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed the meat would taste different. Thanks for the advice!

Hatchbawks has black australorps. Dont know if you consider them a hatchery or not.

I've been doing soom research on Maran's. the Lemon, Blue, and Splash is not yet recognized by Standards. One said 150 eggs a year then another said 200 eggs a year. healthy happy girls and a few eggs, and lots of Chicken TV will make me happy. The Lemon seems confusing, the pictures very in color, could be color in pictures and my computer are calibrated and true. No matter what it is going to be an adventure.

Processed my tiny crowing cockerel yesterday. I seriously (

drama!) felt traumatized at the killing part, which took less the 3 seconds. Milk jug as a cone, lopped his little head off with brand new tree loppers. I'm not sure there is quicker and less traumatic way to kill...besides letting someone else do it., but ugh, hated it. The rest was quick and easy. I skinned since I didn't want to deal with scalding and plucking. His wee body is brining right now, I'll probably do stock with him. This guy was a Polish/silkie mix, obviously small at only 3 months old.

It gets easier. My first caused me to feel weak and need to sit down for a bit. He was beautiful but a rooster that I did not want. Really, it does become less traumatic and at this point I am jaded and really enjoy eating my own chemical free food. YES !!
