Arizona Chickens

cbnovick, twinklin, beautiful birds. cbnovick, the coloring of the buffs is gorgeous. twinklin, you have a great yard!

I concur on all counts!

cbnovick, the pics of your BOs made me miss my recently departed girls and brought a lump to my throat thinking about them. I'd love to get some more someday and yours look delightful.

So I'm picking up some day old chicks tonight (so excited!) and I was just reading a thread about wet and dry pox. Do I need to vaccinate for that here? I'm only getting six chicks but the bottles I've seen are for 1,000 doses. Also, should I vaccinate for Mareks as well? Anything else and where's the best place to get meds? finally, how on earth do you give a shot to a chicken??? Many thanks for your shared knowledge!

Congratulation on your chicks! Did you get them?

I think that if you were going to vaccinate, then Mareks would be a biggie. I didn't vaccinate my first or last batches of chicks (only because it slipped my mind in the last hatch), but for the middle batches I got my vaccine from Jeffers. The shipping is painful, but the vaccine lasts a while refrigerated. Fortunately, I had a couple other folks that I split the order with so it wasn't all that bad. It would be best to vaccinate on the first or second day, so you're a bit late on it; there are good descriptions here and on you tube showing how to do it--it's very easy.

On the way home from work, my wife found a HUGE prickly pear cactus that has some beautifully ripe fruit! It is at a dentists office near our house, so I stopped in to ask if I could harvest them all. They agreed without hesitation! Now, to decide how many buckets I need to take with me... Thank you, love!

Oh, beautiful tuna, you have a date this weekend with jam, syrup and my wine fermentation buckets...

I've been wanting to watch this.  Everyone who has seen it seems to love it.  It never occurred to me that it would be on Netflix, I'll check it out this weekend.

That is wonderful film, I loved it and touched me deeply. At the end he found out what most of use do not seem to understand. In nature, animals grow up, buddy's as Juveniles change as adults. The day always comes when males MUST declare their territory, they must past on their genies.

I have watched "Fatal Attraction" were men think that that bull that acted as a pet will always be a pet....NO! They grow up, other males are a threat to them.

It is so sad. Roosters will go after the males in the house first, then the other meat eaters. Most male animals learn the the alpha male.... Dogs are for ever puppy's, breed that way, but a very Strong Alpha will challenge any male over and over again. I love the solution to a dominant rooster, pick him up flip him on his back and tuck him under your arm and carry him around awhile like that......... He will ether be nice to you or keep his distance, until he thinks he can dominate you..... And win. :)

Yum!

Question? Can you give figs to chickens?
yes, they eat the leaves too.

i also really enjoyed that video about the turkeys and i noticed something when they seemed to be looking for the 2 that had died they made sounds. when we were processing our 4 at home (the same day as your party) i had 2 roosters who both seemed to mourn the loss of their brothers. they made crying sounds and looked all over the yard. it was weird, i didnt want to think much about it because they are food...
