Arizona Chickens

My husband hikes and climbs in the desert frequently, and he has commented on how amazingly fast new growth begins after a forest or wild fire. Yes, it takes many years fr a tree to grow to the size it was before, but new growth starts almost immediately.

Lots of things only sprout after a fire either directly because of the effect of the heat on the seeds (some evergreens) or because the chemistry of the soil has changed. Because of the vagaries of seed dispersal, some areas may rejuvenate quickly and others take longer. The severity of the fire damage can also have a large impact.

Your husband is a rock climber? Do you climb? We are a fanatical family of rock climbers.

We've not yet climbed outdoors in the Phoenix area. Although, a few times a year we make it up to various gyms in the valley for rock climbing competitions. We were at the Phoenix Rock Gym two Saturdays ago. Our daughter is on Tucson's rock climbing team and she's the real rock star in the family. She finished third in the Southwest Region (AZ, UT, NM) last year in her category (first place winner also took first at nationals) and she's training like an olympian to get better. She's one of the best female climbers in the Southwest Division (which is the most competitive in the nation). She finished in the top 25 fastest speed climbers in the US last year (although she thinks speed climbing is silly and would be disappointed in me bringing it up). She achieved all that in spite of some terrible trouble she had and we're all hoping that this is her year. We train together as a family as schedules permit and strive for climbing/training six days a week. She usually uses the seventh day to relax with friends up on the mountain, even though most people wouldn't consider what she does up there relaxing. I usually don't brag too much about her here, but she's just so awesome.

omg, that's awesome, but even looking at that makes me feel sick. Climbing is so fun but it takes nerves and I'm lacking in that department. I've always been able to go up, but can't go down. And when I'm at the top I'm a quaking, wobbling mess and can't enjoy the view or even my accomplishment. Anyway, your daughter sounds totally awesome and I'm glad you showed her off to us!
