I'm thinking about trying to TRADE my Sicilian Buttercup pullets for a couple Marans or another large brown or large white egg laying Pullets or hens. I have two and they are probably a month or two away from their first eggs. They are sweet and friendly, quiet and not flighty, not afraid of dogs either. They must go together and I'm only interested in a straight two-for-two trade.

Maybe nobody is interested but I figured I would try y'all here first! My EE eggs are much smaller than I expected (I bake a lot) and I am not so interested in the eggs from the Buttercups being even smaller than theirs. Will make baking recipes difficult.

PM me if interested!

Finally starting to cool off down here on the border. The birds just love it. They are now up when I leave for work at 3:30am and eagerly awaiting their daily crumble mix. The Tom turkey (Gravy) is now roosting outside in the run since the nights are so nice. But he does leave some massive poo in one spot under the roost. He will be accompanying me to my daughters school for fall festival for the kids to pet and play with. He loves kids and has grown into a great big feathered dog! So that will be fun. The eggs are coming in nicely. Just giving away dozens that get in excess. Next year I will charge. Family and friends have a hard time getting boxes back to me. I have a really nice big pile of compost that is about ready. I think my new little tree and the plants on the front of the house will get it. When I turn over the pile, there are tons of grubs that go right into the run. Birds go crazy those days! I have one red sexlink that just loves being with me in the backyard. She tries to escape the run everytime I'm out in the yard. Still waiting for my B/W ameracaunas to start laying. Then I have the egg color my kids want to see soooo badly (blue-green). Maybe next spring I might be looking for some meat birds to raise quickly and have a beercan chix day with the neighbors. Have a great weekend.

Fuzzybird I raised guineas when I had more land. First I had the usual pearl grey type. Four of them, decades ago and they were raised with the chickens and I had not problem but as as I can remember they were all female. Their eggs were very even and have harder shells than chickens but they tasted the same to me.

Later I sent for eggs for the buff dotted type because they are touted as being more docile and you can determine sex by the coloration of the chicks. I hatched out an even number of males and females and they coupled up and with their mate. One day I made the mistake of letting the guineas out at the same time as the chicken flock and they had not been raised together. A power fight ensued between the main rooster in each flock and by the time I caught one of them I thought that they would die just from being so excited. Do birds have heart attacks ? It sure looked like it to me !!!

I kind of think I have both sexes in my two Guineas. They have differant sounds. I read that the hens have a two sullible call and the males a one, being more of a chi chi or cha cha sound. Very young yet tho at only 2 weeks. We don't try to keep roosters but do have one silky rooster now. When they start to be out side together I will watch carefully for and hostilaties.
Yes I do believe birds can be scared to death.
Both my chicks are still in the house. Hope I can get them outside in a coop soon. Not sure what age they can go with out heat.

It is funny, anymore I do not bother with a brooder in the summer. If I have hatched chicks, I find a foster mom, my half-silkie or a marans hen. One time I did leave them in a brooder outside. At night time they just huddled together. The reason that I kept them inside the brooder was for safety. Too many neighborhood cats who eat chicks. So what I am saying here is that as long as the chicks get started off eating and drinking, they tolerate the temperature change better than we think. I know others who do not use heat lamps in their brooder and claim that it get the chicks acclimated sooner.
