If you want true Ameraucanas, you will not find them from Ace Hardware or hatcheries, they only sell Easter Eggers. Even if they call them Ameraucanas, they truly are not.I am looking to purchase from a local breeder(Tucson, Az). I would prefer Ameraucanas, the Ace hardware sells chicks but I've heard buying hatchery birds is a bad idea. I found another thread that pointed me here so if this is the incorrect thread please tell me.
Thanks.

Does anyone know where Redrocketrooster got the eggs from for her last hatch? I got a Wellsummer, a splash Orpington and a black Orpington (who I think is a boy). I'm curious as to their breeding and I don't want to bother her...I know she's going through a lot right now.
dachshounds are hunters.
Cooper's are THE chicken hawk. Yes, they will go after your birds, even the large ones--if the bird is too heavy to fly off with, they will eat it where they kill it. And will keep coming back for meals until it is all gone.
Eek, well, dang. There are at least 4 Cooper's hawks in the area (2 pairs). The chickens will have less garden time for a bit. I thought maybe it was coincidence with air thermals, because this weekend I watched a pair circling around my yard while the chickens were out, but this morning the hawk was right there, so guess they knew what they were after. I don't trust my big dogs with my chickens, but maybe the little dachshund mix can keep watch over the chickens? Or pretend to at least--all he really wants to do is follow the chicken's around and eat chicken poop.
Thanks pipemum, I have to agree with you!kpgoldstar, your chicks are adorable!
That is a beautiful egg!I think all my chickens are having a competition to see who can lay the most eggs. Glados (one of my EE's) started laying blue green eggs, and they're big for "first" eggs compared to the others (which is kind of funny because she's smaller than both Peep & Cad) (they are more blue green than the pic shows). However in 4 days shes' laid 3 eggs. We get one from Firey (silkie) nearly every day too. It's interesting to me that one chicken will lay an egg nearly every day and another could lay an egg only once a month. I guess every chicken is her own unique snowflake.

I'm giving some kitchen scraps to my five week olds but if you do that, be sure to chop into little pieces. I thought I was going to have to do the Heimlich maneuver on one of my chicks after she downed a large piece of apple. She finally managed to bring it up but I was freaking out for a minute there. (All she did was eat it again, whole.... Whatever.)
Thank you for the warning Mandy!
