Arizona Chickens

Does anyone know where Redrocketrooster got the eggs from for her last hatch? I got a Wellsummer, a splash Orpington and a black Orpington (who I think is a boy). I'm curious as to their breeding and I don't want to bother her...I know she's going through a lot right now.

I just mailed her a invite to our block party..
I will post a invite here closer to the date.

But she does look awfully comfy in the chicken tree... maybe she's going to protest egg laying today.

She's also fighting for top hen rank now. She always seemed pretty content being Eleanor's right hand chick but the past 2 days I've seen her peck Ely away from food, treats, and that special spot of grass that has the most whatever it is that chickens like about that one spot of grass that deserves a fight to get to when there's a whole yard of grass. I guess she thinks she's hot stuff now that she's the only one making breakfast.
That is too funny Twinklin. I have only had my chicks for 2 days and we are already seeing two of them beginning to compete for top hen. My luck they are both roosters! HA! The other 2 so far have not shown any desire for that position. They have nicknames so far but no real names yet. I'm sure it will come to us. I am having so much fun with my little babies!

Cooper's are THE chicken hawk.  Yes, they will go after your birds, even the large ones--if the bird is too heavy to fly off with, they will eat it where they kill it.  And will keep coming back for meals until it is all gone.

Eek, well, dang.  There are at least 4 Cooper's hawks in the area (2 pairs).  The chickens will have less garden time for a bit.  I thought maybe it was coincidence with air thermals, because this weekend I watched a pair circling around my yard while the chickens were out, but this morning the hawk was right there, so guess they knew what they were after.    I don't trust my big dogs with my chickens, but maybe the little dachshund mix can keep watch over the chickens?  Or pretend to at least--all he really wants to do is follow the chicken's around and eat chicken poop.
. Dachshunds are hunters.
That is interesting.

Yes, I did so they are most likely from there. Are they standard bred or hatchery quality? Thanks for the info!

After I responded to your question, I meant to add I will ask.. I think
that you would know that.. I do need to stop assuming.. Sometimes
I wish we all had telepathy.. & thank you for picking up the feed for us!
I have been reading the ingredient's from big sky organic feed.. I like
what I read..
To help with the the amount of waste I put a cardboard with a 2 inch lip
all the way around the bottom.. That way it will get captured. Plus if it
gets caca on it I can toss it when it gets gross.. We also put it up on blocks..
I am thinking of hanging it..
Will ya all chime in on if you hang your feed & at what height..

My Silkie cockerel has been great overall, despite being the runt of the litter. My young Ameraucana pullets are bigger than he is, but he was still willing to chest bump the larger Black Copper Marans and New Hampshire cockerels that I had to help keep them in order. Until they got significantly larger than he is, he was the man of the house. I can't say anything bad about him, except that he's small, ugly and probably wouldn't win out against any predators, in my opinion. But both the Silkies would be the "bait" if you will, for any hawks or yotes that may decide to attempt ordering take-out from me. My wife still loves him and he does serve a purpose, so each to their own.

Ah, now I understand the reason.

I didn't get all the details. I wish I had. But she said that BCMs were from Garry Farms and Greenfire. I guesss Garry got them from Greenfire? She mentioned that she has complete notes on their line. When I picked them up, Azkat mentioned that the Lavender Ameracaunas I got were bred specifically for body color (as opposed to egg color.) So from that I got that all of the eggs came from someone who was really working on breeding good birds.

Have you tried calling her? She had to give up ALL her birds so I can see her not wanting to really have anything to do with it at the moment. It has to be devastating.

If you get any info, please share. I'd love to know more.

BTW, my BCMs turned out to be blue, which Garry Farms also breeds. I've been assured that they are all male. If anyone is looking for Greenfire blues for breeding, I seem to be in a position to share.

oh yes, I do know that dachshunds are hunters. Even though he's intimidated by the chickens (dach mixed with something timid), a dog is a dog is a dog. Poor thing is also pretty sick and slow (valley fever that doesn't respond all that well to meds) so the chickens are fairly safe from being Buddy lunch. Guess that's not much of a hawk deterrent though, eh? Sickly little dog probably looks more tasty than a chicken!

I have a hanging feeder. It's about a foot off the ground. The raised feeder contains the dry food, and then I also feed fermented feed in a shallow planter dish and cut out milk jug, on the ground. They step on that, poop on it, and kick it around. The hanging feeder stays wonderfully clean. The only issue I had with it is that the bottom dish is screw into the top part--the wingnut somehow spun loose and all the feed ended up on the ground. Luckily it was at the end of the week and I didn't lose too much feed--at the beginning of the week I'd have been greatly annoyed.

Oh, who posted the new blue egg? It's gorgeous. My EE eggs are beautiful and perfect and greenish blue. I love her green eggs, but I do want a blue egg layer someday.
