Arizona Chickens

Wow Shaun, you have just been everywhere right? Listen though, my order for chickens is in May (pending when all my breed are available) at Natures Hatchery. If you haven't found all the breeds you want I can certainly add a few to my order.

Keep that in mind too if you end up expanding your flock even further.

Good luck with everything and don't forget to snap some pictures when you can.

Thanks redrocketrooster.

I may add a few more here and there but i have specifics in mind and looking right now for one that will work with the flock so half to 3/4 grown birds. Maybe some marans or some other dark egg layer maybe some Barnevelder things like that for now.

For now untill I know for sure i have more room than the birds need I am good. I just want to be sure that what they have is weather tight just in case but also ok for when its really hot outside.

Thanks though. Ohh and the Quail are growing nicely. They are really cute and have started flying

I will try and get some video online soon of those.

I do dig the barnvelder.

Shaun-- CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW BABIES!

Not much going on here.....I put one of my few surviving eggs under SuperBroody. It was a toss up, do I kill it or let her kill it?

So cross your fingers, those eggs are due on the 30th.

Sommer emailed me today. Somehow she acquired 30 turkey eggs and needs incubator space. I told her she can stick them in the reptipro, which seems to be working nicely. No "incubator of death" for her!

Well, so much for perfect clarity.

Shaun - great report. glad to hear the DW is on board. Looking forward to pictures. I am very curious about the frizzle/silkies.

Nessa - glad you found a home for the coop.

BROODY NEWS:

My sister thought I should take the fake eggs away from the broody and put the chicks under the her cover her in complete darkness and wait. I couldn't do that. I just couldn't. I had visions of six bloody dead chicks. I did more research by searching adopt on the forum. I found a post by someone who took a chick a few hours old and put it a few feet from a broody hen and stated the chick and hen ran towards each other. My dad came to stay with me and this morning he was saying it would be nice to get the broody on board mothering the chicks. So I had a some moral support and 2 extra hands. Some of you said to make sure the chicks were 3 days or less if I tried again...so time was running out. So this morning I sent Dad, without gloves (what was I thinking?) to get the non-eggs from the broody. Heaven was helping. She was up getting a drink, so no blood was drawn. (Good news for Dad especially.) I brought out the 3 boys and set them in the dog carrier where she has been brooding. Well, it took awhile, but in the end, all is well and she is sitting on all six chicks! I will have to tell you the step by step later. It was interesting how it all played out. Oh, and before we took them out, Dad, who is a picture taker (unlike me) got some shots of the babies. I will see if I can get them posted.

Wishing you all a happy chicken day!

Holly

Yay for broodies!! Glad to hear Cheerful!

All is well here. Might need to take a pic of all 16 of my young birds roosting on the top roost. As they grow, it gets harder and harder for them all to fit. It is comical at sunset to watch them get up there and knock each other down and get back up until they are all up there.

AZDC so those were your birds listed on CL! I wondered when I saw the ad. They look just like mine.

Shaun - you are going to love those birds!! Ours are the sweetest birds we have ever had. They are the first "lap chickens" we've had. Even the littel rooster is just a sweet thing! Congrats on your new flock! I am thrilled you got that cool coop from Nessa. Very nice! Can't wait to see pics.

I was referring to the Ameraucanas that Shaun bought from AZDC. She hatched them from Mahonri's birds. I have some that we hatched from Mahonri, too. Those Ameraucanas are just so sweet and friendly!! We have EEs from him, too and while they are friendly, they are not as friendly as the Ams. It must just be in their nature.

I just love broodies!!

Isn't that just the sweetest thing?!

C'mon, now.

This is Arizona! If you live here, you gotta find the positive in the heat. Lots of swimming! Early early early rising to catch the sunrise and the semi cool weather! Those beautiful storms! Hot evenings on the patio, or in the pool (I don't have one). Oh, and my trees grow like weeds and need my pruning therapy regularly!! And remember that it is the hot summers that provide for the gorgeous winters!!

Cute chickas and broody Cheerful! I love broody hens.

My neighbors on my left admitted to knowing we have chickens. They said they like them. She asked if she could look at their first eggs. This makes my week.

In other news I can't get my EE Pooky out of the tub!!!! I just made it a few inches so I could get the crud from her feet and SHE WON'T LEAVE.
Even has the audacity to get crabby with me when I try move her. I bet she would make awesome soup (no, i'm kidding!).

Pooky, I need a shower...get out of my bathroom. >:C
