Arizona Chickens

Gallo, if you click on the pic to expand it, just to the right of her brown spot I call the ear (remember I am a newb), there is a raised red bump. It is apparent on both sides of her head. I never saw this with my other chicks. Does she just have a different coloring? The other chicks have no redness to their faces whatsoever.

Hi everyone! So happy to hear about Gallo's roo rehoming. What a great community to make that happen.

It's sooo windy here in Scottsdale right now. I think it has started to rain, too.

I took a flashlight out to the coop to see if the girls are still sleeping on the ground and they are. Will they move? They can go up the ladder to the second floor or sit like they are in several inches of straw. Or all but the silkies can can roost. They won't sit there getting wet will they? Or will they - it's pitch black out there.

Which brings me to another random thought. Is it just mine or are silkies monumentally dumb? Mine are so freaking unfriendly but I could live with that. They're fun to watch. But they will run into walls trying to avoid me.

Last random: Are any AZ peeps "experts" on Marans? I need to know if these are all three blues or if two are black. Thanks for any and all responses.

See the difference here?

I finally got a few good pictures of a few of my girls.

No political talks in my family. It's not worth losing family over. We can't be civil about our differences.

Thank, it is not just me. When someone try's to convince me I just lesson. You can not shut them up. It had been mentioned in years past family's stick to gather (election years). It was something I feel in untrue in politics, I'm sure some do, but!

And congratulations on the egg. I know how exciting that is.

Are you sure this is not a cockerel with red face and earlobes developing? It looks normal to me. Could also be a pullet that is maturing more rapidly than the other birds. Unless I am missing something.

Kpgoldstar, maybe the chick was bitten by ants? I dunno, if she/he is feathering out more slowly, it could be a he?

Yes, for clarification it was the dark egg (3rd egg) in the row. Much nicer than the blotchy mess from earlier. I guess her body figured out the coating mechanics. Not from desertmarcy, I wish I'd known of her before I got chicks...Slayer is from hiipie chicks n eggs. Super nice folks.

Mf, the marans look blue. But not an expert here. Just doesn't look like my bcm, though, she's too black.

I have 2 silkie /polish mixes and they aren't friendly at all. Real flighty. They are my least favorite. They aren't dumb, but they seem like it because they can't see. They fly INTO me trying to get AWAY from me. Those head feathers are evolutionarily not smart. Try trimming your birds head feathers, that won't make them friendly, but they'll stop seeming braindead when they can see.

Hi everybody - I have a beautiful white showgirl rooster that I hatched from eggs I purchased from RIRJen and he has started crowing so I need to find him a new home. I'm in Tucson, and I have him posted on craigslist, along with pictures. Please let me know if you might be interested.

Lol, my silkies are so sweet and super friendly. As soon as I go outside they come running over. One really likes to be "petted" and another doesn't like that so much, but she still eats from your hand and loves to just be around me. When I do chores outside she stays within a footstep of me. They are pretty smart too. We had a hawk incident and they all knew what to do and at least one is already clicker trained (inspired me to train the others when I get the chance).
