Arizona Chickens

Word of caution...I added some adolescent and adult birds to my flock. They had some respiratory issue. It can wipe out your entire flock. Just another piece of "wisdom", I use this term lightly, from been there done that.

Chicks or hatching eggs or buy from a very reputable breeder....

That reminds me...

Does anyone have any info on NPIP certification here in AZ. I contacted the Department of Agriculture. The state vet responded that they didn't have manpower to do certifications as he was the only vet. They were looking for an assistant vet, due to funding received, and I have not heard back from him.

Has anyone been certified here? If so, how? Thank you in advance for any info.

We tried to get some turkeys from desert Marcy however she was out..

Sounds like a gret time.. We are into having parties like you.. Wish you were our neighbors.. Along with the rest of ya all!!

I am looking at some live birds today. The sellers butchered most of their flock. The were selling butchered and frozen for $50. They were listed on Craigslist. All organic and orchard raised. I don't know if they have any left....maybe if you are interested for Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate:)

Shoot we do prime rib for Christmas.. Hopefully next time thank you for that..

Third rescue was a shi tzu running down the middle of the road, on my way home from work. Was almost hit by car in front of me. He jumped into my arms. He was a mess of mats and ingrown dew claws. Just filthy. I drove around the neighborhoods looking to see if anyone was out looking for him. Watched for lost signs to post. He was a typical little dog. He got along with Lucy and Bear. Lots of grooming went into that guy. He injured his eye and eventually it had to be removed. Gus was his name. He got some kind of testicular cancer or something going on in that area. We had to have him put down. We had him for 3 years.

My fourth rescue was a male red nose pit bull!

Now, mind you, I had never owned a pit bull nor wanted a pit bull!

But there he was with his nose up my bum as soon as I pulled into Sam's Club and exited my vehicle.

Strapping young guy, in a sense, handsome and young. Under a year old or so. Intact male at that. He then started to cruise the parking lot.

Well, I was at the store to pick up a birthday cake and dog food that my hubby didn't find time to do that day. So here I am at 6pmish trying to get home for my son's birthday dinner and celebrate and I am dealing with a pit bull. I blame it all on hubby. You should've been here earlier....blah blah blah

After contacting police, Avondale has you call police and they contact their animal control. It's not up to county in Avondale. I waited, car show going on, everyone just ignored this guy. I ended up having to rescue him from a busy intersection by placing my purse handles over him like a collar and leash. Hubby said, you know they will put him down when they bring him in. I ended up calling off police and took him home.

That's when we learned how wonderful pit bulls were. He and Bear had issues. There were fights. No fights until I brought Joe home. I forgot, Lucy was the husky. She just snarled at both of them and they left her alone. She was so smart.

Zeke was the 5th rescue. He is such a lover. He was loved by his previous owners but it was a hoarding situation. He has a good life now.

Joe had issues with everyone. Dog fights were occasional. They eventually escalated. My others were being hurt. Joe was getting hurt too. Never knew what would set it off but most of the time it was a neighbors dog that would come to the chain link gate and start it in motion. The fight was on.

As I brought home Teddy and Gracie, the fights got worse.

The last fight was the second fight for the week. I got the hose to try and break Joe off Zeke. Joe drug Zeke to the back of the property. I was hitting Joe with a metal pole form a barn being erected. He wouldn't let go. Suki got in the mix trying to help Zeke. She did this many times. She would get Joe to let go of Zeke and they would fight until we broke them up.
I used a shovel on Joe's back and head and he finally let go. This was his last fight. I couldn't take it, the dogs were in danger...it was time to put him down.
He was 7. We gave him the best life we could offer him. He was a fighter through his days. He fought on his way out too. The vet forgot to tell us that some dogs make lots of noise after medicine and heart stop is injected. He was trying to bark as he passed. It was excruciating but the right thing to do. The thing we put off for as long as we could. Hubby carried him to the car afterwards, in tears. Joe was a good dog but not good with other dogs, when it came to territory. Hubby placed him on his dog bed with his toys and some rocks. Forgot to mention, Joe dug for rocks and chewed on them. Sometimes he ate them. He had worn down most of his teeth because of this.

We have our animals buried under our garden. They have a pleasant final resting place.

Sorry if I spoke too much....I really enjoy sharing and hearing others stories. Whatever pets they are....

We don't have a big enough property to bury all the dogs we have had..
Glad you mentioned about the free spay & neuter.. Most forget about that.. Even still some people are not educated enough to own a animal..
That is another subject.

Gallo, I'm glad to hear the turkey was delicious! City Farm, I finally realized it was you who left a message on my phone machine. Your # was garbled so I couldn't call you back. However, I still have at least 4 turkeys not spoken for that I will process for Christmas. They were too young to butcher for Thanksgiving plus I did not have time to do any more than I already did. Anybody interested, please PM me, I don't always read the threads.

That video is hilarious! We just moved to acreage out here in May and I have wanted chickens my whole life, so we finally got some. I started with 4 thinking that would be plenty, then a new neighbor gave me her 5 that she wanted to get rid of. Then we had some chicken deaths and I had to replace those. Then we had some more chicken deaths and I figured I'd better overbuy to make sure we had enough and now I have 12 chickens total! We also have acquired a potbelly pig and two more dogs for a total of 5 dogs since we've been here. I have to be very careful when I go to the feed store and see the baby chicks as I always want more! Oh, and I think a goat is on the horizon. lol
So I just met up with a sheep farmer. He said sheep are much cleaner and less destructive than goats. He is selling them for $250, does only. They are Tunis. They are young...

can't rmbr age though. He has turkeys for sale also $40, orchard raised bourbon red. He is in Waddell too.

I have a broody!
Mary, my Orpington just growled at me and fluffed her feathers.

I know it is a symptom of this illness.... But dose anyone have fertile eggs? I just can't wait to have a mommy carring for her baby's. She had to have been the one to roll tge dummy egg back into the nest.

OH! One more thing I am convinced that Angle, my Lemon Cuckoo Marans is a roo. Dose canonizing really stop them from crowing? Will I need to rehome him, Angle is very sweet as of yet. And getting handsom. I will post a new photo of him tomorrow. His comb and waddle are right red, looks like he will be a big boy, he is now as big as Sylvia and the largest of my chicks. I do hope someone out there will want him. If you are to far away I may be able to meet you half way. Flower if you want him let me know, he is yours. No crowing yet or even a sign he wants to. I do wish I could keep him, but one Possable.

Since Demo and his family NEED to make a trip to Marci's for turkey poults, and you want to visit and I want to visit Tucson, well how about a big camping round up in the early spring before the heat come back ? I have a small camper and I just need to see that area at least once !

How about a chicken meet in late February or March Tuscon people ?
