Arizona Chickens

We planted 3 rose bushes. Love song, rouge royal & dark night.. The flock really likes rose petals..
Our neighbor gave us permission to pick her rose bushes. We have been giving them her just about
ready to drop petals..

RIP Beep2

Something killed her FAST. She came down ill yesterday evening...I brought her inside. She was puffed up and wouldn't move. I felt her crop or was sloshy and rather big. I forced her to vomit. It smelled awful and she perked up a bit. I gave her ACV water and some simple feed. And she seemed comfortable. She was gone in the morning.

Thoughts? Should I be worried about the 3 other ladies? I didn't think id be so sad about a chicken death. But she was my first chick and gave us our first egg.

If it smelled that was no good.. If that was the cause I would not be worried. Read up on it on the Fourm..
From what I remember after you expelled her crop no food for 24 hours.. But I would double check.. That Is
just one part of it...
Condolences from us :hit

My sympathies on the loss of Beep2. It is very sad to lose one.

I'm so sorry about Beep2. She's the one you had that looks like my Eleanor who has crop issues. Ely's are chronic and I'm constantly trying to "fix" her with vomiting, withholding food, yogurt etc. It sounds like Beep2 had sour crop but unless she had it for a long time and you didn't notice I don't know how it could kill her that fast. I have to make Ely vomit almost every day anymore. It stinks very bad. She also doesn't lay anymore because of it. My last resort to allow her to continue to free range is the crop bra I made her today. If that doesn't work then she'll be permanently confined to the coop/run while the other girls free range. It makes me very sad to think she'll be all alone like that but her crop is pendulous and she can't break down grass. Only other choices are to make her a house chicken which with 2 cats I'm not sure how that would go or to cull her which I really don't want to do.

Here's Ely in her bra I made today. I need to come up with a different design I think though. I read about making one from a sock which might work better since the one I made seems to shift over to the side and her crop pops out.

Chris, so sorry to hear of your losses this week. Mckenzy also very sad news about your first chick and egg layer.

On a brighter note, here is a picture of this afternoon's beet harvest during halftime. The girls love all the broken leaves I toss them from pulling these out of the ground! Yummy treat for them.

While we were trying to build the kids trampoline... Look who was trying to sneak into the playhouse... Until my 7 yr old daughter caught them and chased them out. Then they went around the other side and tried to sneak in the window.

I had a near miss today. Luckily my neighbors were home...my buff orp got tangled up in a piece of aviary netting and they came over to tell me someone was squawking. I ran out back thinking of course it will probably be Ms. Muffet our BO, the ONLY hen that I can't pick up...she has a nasty peck! Sure enough it was her. She actually let me pet her and pick her up to get her loose.

I have been working on this stupid aviary project for over a month and want it finished! They don't usually forage where the net was hanging loose, so I finished working on that part and tightened up another section as well. Once I get the hedge trimmer out there tomorrow and remove some oleander branches, I will be able to secure the 36 foot edge along one side to the fence and it will be 90% wrapped around the back/sides and over my coops and run and out of their way.

The issue with it taking so long is that I ordered two 25x50 foot nylon nets from Amazon, but after I attached it every 6 inches around the top of the 3-horse corral...it wouldn't reach the opposite fence. I again checked the Pythagorean theorem and it was correct but the net was actually more like 18x50 feet. But after going up and down the ladder hundreds of times I wasn't about to take it down and send it back.

I'm gonna go hang out in my new brooder with the chickies for awhile and pout about the Niners losing. Have a good night all!
