Arizona Chickens

2 of my neighbors said they would allow us to
start our Bee Hive colony in their back yard..

So if anyone has any equipment they no longer use please let us know, we would love to start collecting.

I have several beehives, a smoker, a hive tool and a hood you can have. In exchange for some honey down the road, of course!

Since my wife is adamantly opposed to having a hive, I'll let them go to youu. I still really, really want one, though.

I will send you my cell#.. Along with our email.. I have a photo of the container on my phone..
Demo might add to the info he finds.. He is so good at that!!

Thanks for the compliments. I haven't checked in to that, but if you don't mind sending me that picture, I'd appreciate it. The more we can do for her, the better.

We spent the better part of today installing the tankless water heater. We have the gas line run, but we have to have Southwest Gas tie it in to the meter. We have to re-pipe the plumbing and run the vent. It's been a good deal of work, but thankfully my Uncle has the pipe threader to make it far easier than doing it manually. It sucks having no hot water!

Hoping I wake up to peepers. Have 3 silkie, 5 BCM and 4 EE eggs due tomorrow. Just put in 18 purebred Ameraucana from show quality stock from Padilla's Peeps for me and a large number (forgot to count!) Muscovy eggs for a friend. Collecting more BCM eggs and just put my EE boy Earl Grey in with his half sister and a purebred blue Ameraucana. I don't want to hatch a bunch of theirs, just a few.

Have been working on a little silkie coop, 40x48" two floors, entirely recycled materials, almost done. Plan on doing about 4 of these so I can have broody silkies raise all my babies ;-) Progress pictures are on my blog, link in my signature line.

The only problem is out of 8 silkies only 3 are hens with one more I"m not sure of yet. I didn't get pics of most of the girls today; just the boys.

Snowman

Smokey

Precious

Mr. No Name

Snowman & Smokey are the boys that Mandy gave me. Precious & No Name I won in a raffle at the Tucson poultry show. Still not sure if Precious is a boy or a girl.

summer bunnies, like summer hatched chicks will not grow as large as fast as those hatched in cooler weather. The heat depresses the appetite and they won't grow nearly as fast. Also in buns their ears can get so long they break over at the base and look like Lops; they never get better looking, either. Of course not a problem if just for meat. The other thing tho is that it is hard for the does to be kindling in the heat. I lost one once because it was about 95 when she was in labor and even ice bottles didn't seem to help. I breed for litters over the winter months only and give them the summer off, but I also do not go out of my way with fans or coolers or anything in the summer.

Thank you Mary. I am laughing today because this all may be a moot issue. I have been attempting to sex the rabbits. (with my inexperience) I wore my reading glasses today and based on what I have learned from youtube, it appears I have two does.

. This is my luck. I will wait a few more weeks to be sure. However, the appearance has not changed since they were 5 weeks old. They are 8 weeks now. Thanks for the input.

Yikes! That is a long time with no hot water. Hopefully the rest of the project goes quick. Is SWG going to charge you for the hook up?

When I spent 8-1/2 months on a boat, no hot water. I had to heat it, bath using about 1 cup of hot water with soap, then rinse with the rest, carefully. It took about 5 wash cloths, 1 soap, 4 rinse. It puts things in perspective. Great-full for conveniences. :D Limited electric, DC only. 1 deep cell battery solar charged.

Does anyone in Arizona do aquaponics? I am interested in trying aquaponics this spring. I hear it is really good for growing vegetables. We are interested in having koi and if they fertilize my veggies and make tomatoes possible in Tucson, that is great!

I do. All the pics I posted earlier were vegetables grown aquaponically. Here are some pics of lettuce that I posted a few weeks ago:

This is an organization I have recently found out about. I will be volunteering next week on one of their projects so I can learn more about installing an aquaponics set up at our home. Hope you find it helpful even if it's not in your area.

That is great! Actually your photos is what made me think of aquaponics! They look so healthy. I just went to a workshop at EcoGrow on aquaponics! I am really impressed with your set up. Great job. Beautiful. :)
