This is an organization I have recently found out about. I will be volunteering next week on one of their projects so I can learn more about installing an aquaponics set up at our home. Hope you find it helpful even if it's not in your area.

That is great! Actually your photos is what made me think of aquaponics! They look so healthy. I just went to a workshop at EcoGrow on aquaponics! I am really impressed with your set up. Great job. Beautiful.

Thanks! When you get ready to put together a system you should drop by and see mine. Those guys at EcoGrow are great. When they have stuff I need, I get it there. Have you been to the Tucson Aquaponics MeetUp? I used to go to the meetings but they conflict with other things I'm doing now.

That's fantastic! I only have a couple plants this year; I miss picking giant bowls full every few days. We'll have enough to make broccoli snow-pea stir-fry several times before the heat, but not too much to make everyone sick of it like last year. I never get tired of it though. I too got a really late start this year, I always say, "next year I"ll be on time!" Then I'm late. I have tomatoes that are just ripening too, they should be ready tomorrow. I have been getting seeds started for my spring/summer garden though. I sprouted and transplanted tomatoes and bell peppers over the past few days and I'll get a bunch more started over the upcoming days.

as long as we don't get any more frosts my bell peppers from over this past summer should be able to continue on. They got hit with one frost and so I cut the older ones back but they all have new buds on them so once it's warm they should be good to go. Last year my tomatoes lasted all the way through until May when it started getting too hot so I don't think I'm going to plant any more, I'll start some more tomato seeds this week inside but I may just let the 6 plants I have now do their thing, hopefully they produce a few more months. I'll be seeding my squash and cucumbers in a few weeks. I have better luck planting the seeds for them right in the garden vs starting them indoors.

My silkie really surprised me.  From what I researched on Silkies they take up to a year to mature (to crow or lay) and she started laying very young.  Probably 5-6 months.  Her eggs are very small, she is petite.  She can fly, but doesn't.  She fluttered about quite a lot as a baby chick.  Her eggs are very smooth and very light brown.  She lays about every other day right now.  She started only a few weeks ago. Sometimes she lays a few days in a row.  The weather has been going back and forth.  She is a good layer though.  She is so so so sweet, soft and cute.

I would not recommend the Iowa Blues for a companion bird.  They're a small, hardy bird.  They are fairly aggressive with resources, like food and water.  It seems that they attack the other birds for sport or fun.  They haven't drawn blood, but they are very fast and very determined.  When I hand feed the birds, they bully their way to the front, peck the feed the hardest and they peck other birds who are eating what they want.  It's my understanding they came from the line of chickens kept in the Appalachians, who weren't fed, but allowed to roam and forage for themselves.  It makes sense.  The pluses of the Iowa Blue is that they began laying very very young and they lay very frequently.  Other than that, I wouldn't get them again.  I love my hens and they get on my nerves with all of their dominant behavior.

How old are the hens?
