Arizona Chickens

Our little silkie Cheryl has decided to stay put on some eggs.. All day as of now.
I added 2 other bantam eggs from her and our Clair a Millie Fluer du'ullcle.
Plus 1 BCM, 1 lighter olive, from mysong, 1 darker olive from flower, & 2 green E.E. eggs
from earlier today.. I know for sure 1E.E. was from foxy lady..
She used her tiny beak to move the new eggs right up under her as I sat them down
in front of her.. She is the cutest, precious little chicken we have..
I hope this moves her up in rank, while having to tend to them once they
are hatched.. She did not fuss that I was digg'n under her to mark the others..
Ok, so to recap.. 2 are hers I believe.. She is lavender/ blue show silkie & the rooster
is a partarage silkie/de'ullce mix.. Spelling is off but you get it.. No just to keep foxy lady
out of the nest..
Actually I don't know her breed color.. Moma hen Chris you posted a photo of your girl that
looks like her twin.. What is she? We are just newbies so I don't want to name her color if I am
not sure..

Are you referring to my little girl Serafina? She is half Silkie and half Serama.

The beautiful weather has had me out in the yard planting as well. I have basically a salad garden started right now. Tomatoes, radishes, lettuce, chives, basil, cilantro. I intend to start zucchini, string beans, cucumbers and plant sweet corn this week. Also hoping the timing is right. We shall see. My other recent addition to the back yard (in addition to our 3 hens) are two rabbits intended as meat breeders. I really love this time of year in AZ. My mothers pet name for our little patch of heaven is "Jackass Acres". She is very much a beach/city woman. I get my love of nature and animals from my father. I am going to have a sign made up with her pet name on it. It makes me laugh to think she's sitting in an apartment waiting on the freezing cold weather back east to warm up, while I'm playing in the yard with the animals and getting my hands dirty in the garden.

Is there a certain kind of tomato that you get? I have never planted any before.

I am trying roma tomatoes this time along with cherry tomatoes.  I've given up on any larger size.  My green thumb is not green enough so far.

Good to know...never had a green thumb at all. I can keep animals and people alive, but not plants. This will be my first trial at gardening outdoors. I have had success with zucchini and mint years ago, but they don't count since they grow like weeds. LOL!

Nice to read about others anxious to get planting. We're rapidly approaching our average last frost date in Tucson, so the chances of calamity are decreasing. With the 10 day forecast, I'm pretty optimistic (of course anything can happen). I think it's really helpful to consult a planting guide; this is a great one for the Phoenix area, as is this one. If you live outside Maricopa, google "planting guide" for your location. I've grown a lot of different varieties in our climate and the smaller cherry tomatoes usually perform better. I highly recommend Punta Banda and Nichols, the former is very large cherry-type and both are well suited to our climate. They'll continue producing when most others fail in our heat and produce all winter long if protected from frost. Here's where you can find them. I've also had Ciudad Victoria and Texas wild cherry, both are much smaller and once you plant them, the'll come up as volunteers all over your yard for years due to bird dispersal (may or may not be a plus for you--we like them). For a large tomato, I recommend San Diego tomatoes. They're huge, delicious and do pretty well in our climate.

@roostereggs Get the grapes in asap!

@flower I hope your recovery is going well.

Hmm, I really need to get my things planted, too. I have some chantenay and kinko carrots, marketmore cucumbers, rattlesnake beans, SMR pickling cucumbers, sugar snap peas, Flamenco and Prescott cherry tomatoes that I really want to get planted this year. I need to check the calendars for when to plant them, before I do it. That's my only complaint with Native Seeds. They are very vague on the details for their products. The customer service and shipping was amazing, though.

Since I'll be off for a month with my wife, I figure this is the perfect time to get the trellis and t-posts up like what Lady had posted photos of. For this first few weeks, I'm going to secure some welded wire over the top of the raised garden beds. It'll give me a good six to eight inches of growth before they'll grow through the cover.

I'm hoping my grass starts coming in again nicely, too. This weather was so weird this winter, I was afraid to start anything.
