Arizona Chickens

Small world - my husband is the plant electrician for Pavestone, the company that makes the Rumblestones for Home Depot!!  We are going to extend our front patio and build a "sitting wall" using them.

How is your wife's recovery progressing?  I had my 4-week post-surgery checkup today - another couple weeks with the walker :-(  Trying to be patient.....

Oh sweet! They make some great stuff. I'm loving the looks of their new Rumblestone design. I think that's what we're going with. The Sierra Blend. It gives it an old, rustic, adobe brick type look. It's just so expensive. Hopefully your husband can get discounts for yours.

Her recovery is going great. No infection, healing nicely and she's more mobile. They took the staples out the other day and she had her first physical therapy today. I told her last weekend that she had to start working on being more self-sufficient and rely on me less. She sure took it to heart and doing so well. I'm impressed and happy for her.

Thanks for asking. Glad yours went well, too. My two-year old, Kaylee, has been the biggest help! She'll carry this huge Nemo plush from the truck to everywhere. We use it to support her knee. It was perfect for her pregnancy, too. Best investment EVER! She'll go get the crutches to bring them over while I was helping Mom stand up and even tries to support Mom's leg when she's getting off the couch. She is so darn cute! It's made my life so much easier, too. A little help goes a long way.

I love Great Danes and Mastifs and known fantastic American Bull Dogs ad Pit Bulls. The Asy Healer is one of the best, and a good candidate to take over Ernie's job some day (hope a long time from now)

I have nothing but scorn for UPS. :rant They hire people that can not read and are scornful, hate filled people. I have seen how they handled my eggs when I went to pick them up. Tossing the box on the counter. All 6 sides was written in large bold print "FRAGLE, FERTILE HATCHING EGGS". I was lucky any hatched. I wish that all of us on BYC could send them at the same time on the same day complaints as to the condition our eggs came to us, photo documentation they were packaged correctly and labeled. But to organize it would be nearly imposable. And I do not have proof, now, that all the packages were well packed and labeled. :somad

Yup, agree with you both! And that's why I'm really hoping that Amazon manages to get it's "drone operated delivery service" up and running as fast as Federal laws will allow! At least they still take pride in their work...

If you look at the nipples to compare them and find more water consumed, you need to remember that the chickens are not really getting all that water as nipples leak and when in use there's a lot of water that drips on the ground thus your chickens are not really getting as much water. It you start chicks on the nipples then that is what they will go to because of conditioning. Someone said when they were using nipples and let their chickens out they went to a water source like they hadn't had a drink in ages. While there are pros and cons for both, if you take baby chicks and offer them both, they will go to the reservoir and, as stated, it takes time for chickens to get used to the nipples because of the inherent mechanics and some chickens are smarter than others. After 50 years raising chickens and using several methods of watering, the automated fountain with a water source tied in seems to satisfy my chickens far better than nipples. All birds can be conditioned to use different types of watering systems, the question is - is it the best for your birds. Your birds make drink and drink from a nipple but still not getting enough because of the loss from leakage.

If your nipples leaked then they weren't installed properly. Leaky watering nipples or too much water coming out when they activate the toggle generally indicates that the water pressure is too high. I don't see a drop lost when my birds drink. I get it that it seems unnatural to drink from the nipples and I felt the same way in the beginning. I also agree that if your birds performed better on the automated fountain than the nipple system you had installed, then by all means go with what worked best for you and your birds. It's great that we have a variety of options available to find out what works best for each of us.

Here is a post on the subject of pressure and leaking by a well respected BYC member that raises large numbers of birds, I especially like his test to see if the nipple is working properly:

I will never order eggs from any mail carrier service ever again.. Local only..
Now I might do day old chicks if we can not find what we want, or go in on a mail order
of day old chicks if it works out with a broody hen...

Ok with the mention of chicks, who has day old chicks in the valley & what breed?
We might add some & hand raise them with the one or two eggs that are progressing from
the shipped eggs.. Candled last night & have 1 for sure possibly 2... Since they are
1 week in age difference our friends might add a few chicks with them..
Thanks in advance...

JUST CONTACTED YAVAPAI ZONING DEPT.. LITERALLY JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THEM (i thought i was only allowed to have 5 chickens... im allowed 8)
I UPDATED THE ORDIANCES SECTION, it really should be all unincorperated areas of YAVAPAI county not just the cities i listed.
