Arizona Chickens

Says who? Sure seems like they are pretty popular.
In my experience if the birds are given nipple feeder water when they are chicks they adjust very well. And sometimes appear to be having a good time competing for the drips of water.

As of this morning 5 new babie chicks... The Millie Fluer is so adorable with all the feathers on HER feet... Even if it is a roo,

he will be beautiful!! Like his dad, Clark Kent... We originally had 8, I will be checking the other 3 this evening.. I candled them at day

14.. There was 3 that did not look like they were progressing.. I will be candling the eggs from McMurry this evening.. Last

I checked about a week ago only 1 out of the 6 that survived the U.P.S. employee's bad behavior of throwing a box that said

FRAGILE, "RUSH" hatching EGGS, might only make it.. 6 were crushed and the yolk was every where... This single egg is a

Araucana . Any way, hoping for all 6 to hatch

:jumpy

OMG how messed up! im sorry UPS
broke ur eggies

Yeah it was so sad to pay that and only get 6. 3 of which will be roosters..

Yeah that sucks for sure... i paid $64 from chickensforbackyards.com got 5 pullets.. but i also had to pay for express shipping $40.. so technicalley $20 for 5 pullets the rest tax & shipping lol.. chickens are expensive when ordering them. i would order eggs but no incubator.

Does anyone near Surprise Arizona have any chicks you want to sell. I am looking for buff orpington chickens, I am looking for some Buff Orpington ducks. My drake is all alone now. I need to get a couple of females for him. I'll go for any of the heritage chickens.

started the supervised free range thang on my days off. All went well, except the neighbors puppy got the girls all riled up. So I snatched him up and threw her in with the turkeys. Now that was funny. The dog hasn't been back in days! lol. No, no harm done just some serious pecking on the head and butt. Gravy (my tom) was not gonna have it! Finally getting into the swing of things eggs and all. But they are all ugly with the falling molt and muddy feet. Still waiting to get some chicks... Busy, busy, busy.

Sounds like my plans. Removed all the gravel, dug out a giant tree, laying in sprinklers, paving a patio, building a short wall and putting in sod. I just bought a bunch of Rumlestone Sierra Blend pavers from Home Depot to make sure it'll look good. I'll go back in a few days for the rest. The three days of rain seriously interfered with this project, but I prefer the rain!!!

Small world - my husband is the plant electrician for Pavestone, the company that makes the Rumblestones for Home Depot!! We are going to extend our front patio and build a "sitting wall" using them.

How is your wife's recovery progressing? I had my 4-week post-surgery checkup today - another couple weeks with the walker :-( Trying to be patient.....

Another thing to think about with hydration is the type of feed they are receiving. A chicken receiving moist, fermented feed will need far less water than one fed dry. Those who forage well should also need far less because the plants and bugs are full of moisture.

Mine do love the F.F. We just started using it about 6 months ago.. We also decided to use the cup system.. I really like the idea of
no debris or their poo in the water.whenever they free range out back with the dogs, they go for the dogs bowl..

If you look at the nipples to compare them and find more water consumed, you need to remember that the chickens are not really getting all that water as nipples leak and when in use there's a lot of water that drips on the ground thus your chickens are not really getting as much water. It you start chicks on the nipples then that is what they will go to because of conditioning. Someone said when they were using nipples and let their chickens out they went to a water source like they hadn't had a drink in ages. While there are pros and cons for both, if you take baby chicks and offer them both, they will go to the reservoir and, as stated, it takes time for chickens to get used to the nipples because of the inherent mechanics and some chickens are smarter than others. After 50 years raising chickens and using several methods of watering, the automated fountain with a water source tied in seems to satisfy my chickens far better than nipples. All birds can be conditioned to use different types of watering systems, the question is - is it the best for your birds. Your birds make drink and drink from a nipple but still not getting enough because of the loss from leakage.
