Arizona Chickens

I did not retire from the army, I do not have a military ID, I did not serve during war time. I only served and received an honorable discharge. I know those retired from the military can stay. Half of all American have served and received honorable discharge. Is that all it requires?

You have to have an identity card to take advantage of those kind of perks. My husband is ex-military and he carries an identification card.  He shows it at Golden Corral when they have their Veteran's Day free meals for veterans.
Cool!
I guess that means I need a spare Retired Vet to travel with me. Anyone have an extra Vet? I will take him in trade for 2 pullets. Would go to 3 but you know there is ware and tare on old vets, they usually eat a lot more then a chicken, not as easy to take care of, and I do not even get an egg by the end of the day.

Right now this is the list that I am keeping:
ERNIE
ROSY (renamed)
Lucy & Lisa
marY the OR is going to be re-homed to a good home.

By the way I think she has gone boody again. If anyone is interested she is up for sale. I am asking $15.00 each. 2 have found a good home. I am in no hurry and can keep them just fine for a month or may be 2. Hope to be gone by May 30.

If the 3 older girls can not adjust to traveling life then they will be up for adoption as well. I will have to start with chicks. Sense I am going to bring up to 2 pullets if I am lucky and have 2. No idea of what kind of egg. Part of the adventure.
Is Mary a Buff Orpington and how old is she?

Where are some good places in the east valley to get fertile eggs and some chicks? What is a good number of chickens to have for a family of 9 to have a good egg supply? Thx!

Right now is chick season so you can find them almost everywhere. Craigslist, feed stores and the like. Trader Joes usually has fertile eggs. If you get a good layer in its prime you can count on 5-6 eggs a week from one bird so it depends on how much you can eat.

You can get an ID through the VA - just need your dd214. You would then have some type of ID and who knows what discounts that will get you!! Maybe someone from the American Legion can answer this question.

How are your babies? did they make it?

Yes! All but one. I did have to bathe some of them (big pain in the tush) but all is well that ends well, huh? The previous batch of 3-4 week old quail are gobbling up the sloppy mess in a wonderful manner. They eat every crumb, wasting not a bit, and gobble it down so fast that I am sure even the runts will be ready to process in another 2-3 weeks. Also, they are not needing water refills nearly so often. I think this is a really successful experiment, although they are now growing so quickly I am going to have a cage space crisis soon. Best get to building my new growout cage.

We are actively looking for a new (larger) house with a big backyard. We should know soon if we can get a loan. Meanwhile I am thinning out our possessions and saying goodbye to lots of stuff gathered with good intentions and too little time.

I'm not a hoarder by a long shot, but maybe a pack rat whose time to declutter and organize has come.

I believe some of my flock has been exposed to pox, I don't know how (guessing wild birds). Now I am starting to have chickens show signs of it. I had 3 cases in the past but I just thought they were either caused by fighting or something else, but looking back I think they may have been pox. I am very desperate and need some advice on what I should do. It looks like the dry kind so I'm lucky in that perspective and did some research on it and it said it would just blow through. Is there any way to prevent it from spreading or help get rid of it? Also, have any of your birds gotten this? I was going to hold back on buying some birds from a breeder that has been having difficulty with pox, but now I'm not so sure. If I've already got it, why wait? I'll try and post some pictures if the birds I suspect may have it.
My flock got it last fall. The dry sort; most of them just had a few marks on their combs; one old bird had their eye swell up which went down over night and one or two had pox on their legs. The telltale sign to me is the very smelly green diarrhea they get the first day or two. Otherwise no other symptoms and it didn't seem to bother any of them. Egg production slowed down for a couple weeks, but it was also time for molting and the days were getting shorter. I did nothing at all about it. Just fed and watered as usual. I did try to not move any birds to new pens or otherwise stress them out while the outbreak was active but otherwise business as usual. So this year only the younger stock will likely get it, as the adults that got it last year will be immune to it now.
