Arizona Chickens

I see so many people wanting free roosters. I have invested more than $20 into each one and I think this would be a fair rehoming fee for each.  I figure if someone wants to breed them and then sell the chicks, they are making a profit and I a loss. I would hate to see them go to the stew pot.

I think $20.00 for a good rooster /good lines + your time in loving on him is extremely cheap. If I were a breeder that would be a very small investment.. I hope he can help someone in their new flock...

Personally I never have and never intendt to spend more than $10 on a rooster. As I see it if your not doing large scale breeding all the rooster is doing is eating feed. But I probably think that because I learned everything from my grandpa who thinks you should still only pay 25 cents for a chick haha

I agree with you. These are in fact chickens still. I can't help but think a dozen eggs is how much $? A cooked chicken at Costco is $5. It's not organic or very large but $5? It's really good too. Unless it's a nice rooster and it was going to breed nice chicks and sustain a flock, I wouldn't be paying very much for any chicken. How many eggs do they lay in their lifetime?

I have a rooster in with my ducks because he is too nice to eat but I have 2 roos and they were over breeding the hens. So my husband found three barred cochins to put in the duck run with Mr Roo. Mr Roo is a EE. I have paid anywhere from $10- - $50 for show stock quality roosters and for hens too. I am not showing now but my kids might at some point with 4-H. I am willing to give my roosters to a good home that wants them for pets or for breeders however if I had nice silkie roosters like mama hen's then I would be willing to pay $20- for them. I just got a very beautiful black silkie roo or I would have been very interested in that splash. so nice.

so I am thinking I want to add some Marans because of the chocolate colored eggs. any suggestions on which ones I should look into? do I need to keep them in their own coop or do they get along with others? I know my Ancona isn't a play well with others kind of gal. I am thinking I want the black copper marans because I want something that does not remind me of a barred rock. I read the silver cuckoo are most popular but they look barred if I am not misreading and looking at pics. anyway I know nothing of the marans and I just want them for the chocolate colored eggs. I also wondered has anyone mixed them with Ameraucanas? If so what color eggs did that result in? any Maran breeders here on our thread?

The Dark Copper Marans lay the darkest eggs. If you use a Dark Marans roo over an Ameracauna you will get olive eggs.

I think Marans are like any other breed in that each bird has its own personality and some can be more ornery than others.(And some lines might be less friendly) I ordered eggs from two different people here on BYC and all of them have been super sweet. My Blue Copper Marans is now with my mother in law and he lets my 2 1/2 year old nephew pick him up and carry him around and is nice to all his hens. Even when first meeting other chickens he was nice, but I am sure some can be mean. Check out the olive egger thread! There are some really really pretty eggs that come from breeding Marans with Ameracaunas!

I have paid $30-$50 for standard bred birds; that is those that at least approach the SOP (there being no perfect bird). the difference between standard bred and hatchery stock is totally shocking; especially when you have them side by side.

In your grandpa's day 25 cents was probably the going price for straight run chicks.

And if I didn't already have 3 silkie roos I would have been looking seriously at those two.
