Arizona Chickens

Have you had the eggs before? Are they similar in taste to chicken eggs?

To me they taste the same. There is a higher yolk to white ratio than a chicken egg. It takes about 5 regular or 4 jumbo quail eggs to equal the volume of one large chicken egg. The shell is thin, but the membrane under it is tough! You can't crack them open like a chicken egg because the membrane keeps it together and you'll get lots of shell into the liquid egg. There are several ways to get the contents out.

You can tap the large end just like you would the middle of a chicken egg, then take your thumb nail and pop off the end of the egg and pour out the contents. It takes a bit of practice.

You can use a serrated knife and cut most of the way through the small end of the egg with a sawing motion then just bend it back like it was hinged and pour out the contents.

Or you can buy quail egg cutters/scissors. I don't have one yet but I'm probably going to invest in one since I should be getting a lot of eggs soon.

To night I was over to my nephews place for dinner. We were taking over safety issues and what I could do to be safer. He said no one wants to read

"Elderly lady found in bushes - flesh torn from her bones when she left her trailer in the morning. ..Survived by 3 chickens and a small shitzue dog"

I do not think I will be trying in to many places were there are Lions, Tigers, and Bears OH My! There are a lot of places were they are but is uncommon, then there are places were they are and is a true danger. Personally I am more worried about 2 legged predictors. My girls will be pad locked in at night.

What a guy; seems your whole family is a bunch of negative Nellies. Follow your instincts and you will be fine; If a person place or thing makes you nervous or uneasy then there is a good reason for that feeling; it's a warning that something is not quite right. And yes I would be more concerned for two legged preds than any four legger in most any area, even out in the woods.

Of course walk softly and carry a big stick. Never act the helpless woman part; that is just an invitation to those that would do you harm. Be confident and appear unafraid, that tends to put any predator off.

:gig Really! I lived on the road in a semi, alone for years. I have slept in neighborhoods you do not want to walk in, in the day time. Always lesson to the gut. We came up with a number of safety features that I will be bringing on the road with me. A game camera, 2 motion detectors, and a motion 12V flood light, we have talk over best place to put them. The only thing that is missing is an electric fence for the girls.

Hey everyone...My boys are back on the market. The people who were supposed to buy the boys never came for them. I am moving into Lady kotadoria's place the first week in June and they cannot come with me :(. I am asking here, arizona backyard farmers (FB) and arizona silkies (FB) if anyone would like to buy them. Barbarino is a Blue Silkie and Vincenzo is a Splash Silkie. They are brothers and hatched June 1, 2013. They come from Sleepy Hollow Farm in Virginia. Pastrymama hatched them at her house. I got them as three day old chicks. Lorenzo is a Black Copper Marans who was hatched on September 21, 2013 at my house. He ended up the only one to hatch from 8 eggs. I got the eggs from Christie Davis from FB. She got them from a breeder but I do not know who. I am asking $20.00 each for them. as chicks 1 day old Lorenzo with one of his 4 mamas Vincenzo, Lorenzo and Barbarino Barbarino Vincenzo Lorenzo
Wonderful photos Chris.. Our neighbor will not pay for a rooster.. He will only have 3 hens & 1 roo.. However I am so excited that he will have a rooster!!!

He said he would like a medium size, people friendly.. I am giving him 2 of our girls.. He also has another hen from his friend.. His coop is almost done..
How about you send some photos.. I will have pick of the litter when it comes to Roos..

That is the roo. He is friendly. His name is Sven. I have more pics I can post later and if anyone wants him as a breeder I will give him to you. I have 3 Roos and 5 hens (NN). My fav breed so far

I just realized that you are in Tucson.. This neighbor has no interest in breeding, he want a rooster that is people friendly.. Big enought to chase off the feral cats.

They are only 5 weeks old today so no eggs yet but I did hear one of the boys crow three days ago!  Corturnix grow up fast!  I'm really enjoying having them.  They are super calm, friendly and make cute noises.  Even the crowing is pretty quiet and sounds like it could be made by the wild birds in the neighborhood. Their most common sound is just like chirping crickets.

Boy does quail sound nice.. Not only their sound but to have.. Do you have photos to show your set up? Where did you get them? Also, are all of their eggs fertile? If so I might want some for our next broody? I do know they have a different diet. I was asking my friend that takes in wild birds a a resue to get them better for re- release.. Some she says will never be able to go back out into the wild, so she has a plethora of birds... More questions on the way... :clap

I see so many people wanting free roosters. I have invested more than $20 into each one and I think this would be a fair rehoming fee for each. I figure if someone wants to breed them and then sell the chicks, they are making a profit and I a loss. I would hate to see them go to the stew pot.

Your roosters are absolutely beautiful and I just love your pics of them. You should definitely charge what you think is fair for them and not give them away.. especially for meat! You must be heartbroken that you can't keep them. I'm sure you'll find someone who appreciates them and will want them enough to pay your price.

I would love to take Lorenzo, but that is about a 120 mile drive (I live just north of Tucson), and I am still building my run. Haven't even started the coop yet, must get everything ready before my JG chicks come out of the brooder in 2 weeks. My next batch of chicks will definitely be Dark Copper Marans!
