Arizona Chickens

If we were closer I'd give you loaner chicks. Lol. I used to do some work at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain there a out every other week. You live near there? It is Dove Mountain isn't it? Also the other resorts in town as well so it was a pretty nice trip to do in a day.

Yes, I will put the mirror back in. A friend at work told me that if I put new chicks in with her, she will kill them. She is 2 1/2 weeks old and about the size of a small robin or dove. What you all think? The local feed store was closed today, so I was not able to get any chicks, but I do have an order of partridge cochins shipping the week of the 19th, and an order of Black Jersey Giants shipping ASAP, hopefully early in this week. Will I have to keep them separate until the newer chicks get some size?

Some have reported this problem, but others have introduced chicks of all ages together with minimal to no problems at all. I have never worried about the age differences and my flock did really well. I kept my chicks separated from the elders the first month for the sole purpose of being able to track them. I free-ranged mine in my entire back yard and those little chicks would disappear in to every crack and crevice they could find! After about four weeks, though, they were let free. Especially as a traumatized loner, I would not expect her to be aggressive at all.

Yeah, Dove Mountain is about 8 or 10 miles east of me, I'm on the west side of the freeway in "old" Marana. Thinking about moving out to Avra Valley (about 10 miles further west) for a much bigger lot. I'll get a couple of feed store chicks (as long as they didn't come from Mt. Healthy) and try it out. She is lonely and I can't be home with her all day.

Thanks for the offer, but no sweat. I know they have chicks at Post Feed in Marana, and I can get some tomorrow. I was just in there Saturday buying feed, and met a friend there that just bought a couple RIR chicks. We talked for a few, and he asked me how my Giants were doing, and I told him they were doing great. This was about 3 hours before the massacre. The BJG's were eating like pigs, and I was down there to get a 50# bag of feed. I know for a fact they have some Australorps, Rhode Island Reds, and Easter Eggers. Maybe some Welsummers, too.

When I got our chicks, there was a 2 to 2.5 week age difference between some of them. It worked out fine on this end. When I bought them, the employee at Pratts said he would not put them together at 3 weeks age difference. FYI

Introduction is important, I let them see each other a day or so, watch how the act or not act toward each other. The more space they have they can avoid each other. Good luck. They should be alright. If she is lonely that may make a difference.

By the way, any Silkie chicks out there? I have some a couple weeks old and some hatched 13th March.

See, now that's interesting. Because from the moment my youngin's were allowed out, my roosters were immediately protective of the babies, every single time. In fact, my roosters even got in the middle of the doe rabbit when she tried attacking her two babies. It was the cutest thing I've seen. A rooster protecting two kits.

There are 4 of them. RIR, and they run them off of everything that they get into and peck them. I squirted them with water a couple times with the hose but doubt it did anything. They're only about 8 weeks old and the chicks maybe 4 now. Maybe all the young roosters are being more rough because of the competition?
