Arizona Chickens

Sorry about the loss of your chicks.  Glad Jenny got some new sisters.

I have five terriers that hunt.  No way will I ever trust them around a small critter. My chickens and quail are kept away from the dogs.  Even so I lost a quail last week when I was changing out dirty bowls for clean ones and a roo walked right over my arm and onto the ground.  He was dead in maybe 3 seconds when my biggest terrier snapped him up and shook him. :hit   At least it was a roo not a hen.  Lesson learned?  Do not service quail cages with the dogs out...ever.

well, I finished the run today, and it is dog-proof. Not going to put any chickens in there yet, I planted buckwheat, BOSS, and Bermuda in there, and it is all sprouting. Need to clean up all the construction scraps, and finish some shade cloth over the roof, and it will be good to go. Moved in a couple ironwood logs this afternoon for roosts. Still working on a horizontal nipple watering system fed by a blue barrel. They better like it!

The best incubators are Cochins!
My cochins are babies and my silkies are not broody but I have an ameraucana that went broody...go figure. We put eggs under her on 5/4 so hopefully we will have ameraucana and EE chicks on the 25th. :)

My husband was in the Air Force and his AFSC was 2A6X1 He was a jet engine mechanic for F15 and F16. He was injured while turning an engine and got out. He is very happy to be back to doing mechanic work again. he also did construction etc. Maybe I should have him get on here and chat with you and K9Dave

Here is 2 pictures of my 1 day old Marin chicks from the previous Sunday! :D
I placed these two babies with some green shells wrapped around them and stuffed them underneath my brooding Americauna while I pulled out her last ceramic egg that she was trying to hatch. She decided she wasn't going to hatch to anymore eggs after she saw the chicks!

That does sound wonderful. Does it keep it's leaves year round? Would it grow down here at lower elevations? I wish I had heard of this a couple weeks ago, we made a "potting shed" from scraps of wrought iron salvaged from my back patio demolition and covered with concrete re-mesh. We planted Tangerine Beauty Crossvines to grow over it. It grows fast and looks good with beautiful flowers, but doesn't have much of an aroma.

I think the Cecile Brunner would do as well as any other rose for you. Mine does keep it's leaves all winter, except the years with real cold and snow, then it tends to shed them, but not for that long.

I do not think you will ever really trust the dog.. We put our dog that we believe would like to eat a chicken for dinner into her kennel when the chickens are out.. However I am still out with them.. Hawks are still roaming the sky.. :barnie
You're right, I sure don't trust him now! With that said, let me introduce Jenny (aka The Lone Survivor) to you all. Over the last few days she has become quite attached to me. I'm her alpha roo....When I approach the brooder, she comes over, cocks her head to eyeball me, and waits for me to pick her up. The new brooder is too tall for her to fly out, so she has to wait... This is Jenny. She likes to sit on my shoulder and preen my beard and eyebrows. She frequently craps on me too, but I'm ignoring that. She's had a rough week. This is Jenny playing nice with her new friends (3 Buff Orpingtons and a Barred Rock). I tried to get a pic of them all sleeping in a ball, but they always hear me coming. I had already forgotten the "face plant" sleeping method of the baby chicks.
Agh, how precious... Thanks for the great photos... Since we are getting the quail & baby duck, I had dreams about them last night.. We are hoping we have no tragedies with intergrating them..have not set a date with them getting here.. Kind of can't wait.. However a bit more work with the duck.. Plus it is a single duck..

Well, I really don't know what to do. He has always been sensitive to my moods and obedient. Usually, when I tell him "NO", that is enough. I've heard that to break a dog from killing chickens, you tie a dead chicken around his neck, and make him wear it for a few days, he will then avoid chickens like the plague. I want to keep the dog, but I want to keep chickens, too, and preferably let them free range in the yard. So, if anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
