Arizona Chickens

There is a emergency Fourm post there for even more to chime in..
Do you think they ate something that they schould not have?

I did post in that forum earlier today and it has not received even one response and only 6 people had viewed it so far. So, i'm not real impressed by the "Emergency&Disease Forum"

I wondered about them eating something that caused this as well, except that they havent eaten anything that the other birds havent.

Newbie on BYC here - I am curious about raising chickens but don't own any myself. I'm posting to inform Scottsdale area chicken owners that there is a lost or loose chicken (red/brown hen) in the area around the southwest corner of Mountain View and Hayden Road on Scottsdale. It is hiding behind a large juniper bush at the moment. Hopefully her owner will find her or a good Samaritan will pick her up.

Most of ya all have chickens, but now that we have been turned on to a baby duck that was hand raised, follows us around everywhere.. In & out of the house, so flipp'!N cute.. We put a hose on some rocks & "she" is loving it.. She is digging for bugs.. The whole flock has not has one problem with her... What a delight.. We already had a pump with a long hose to clean out her "pond" really just a 20 gallon bucket.. Untill we decide where to put in a more permanent pond.. Yeah pond.. Can you imagine that.. I can ... Farm fresh eggs from our own duck.. Huh, who ever thought?
We just need to get another mate for her that is a excellent layer.. We will know in about 2-3 weeks weather or not we have a drake..
It is so fun to watch her dive in the "pond" oh & did I mention duck eggs are more nutritious ?? That is what I have heard.. Need to research on that subject... We have a few people looking for us.. Hope to post photos of then all soon..

You picked a good place to find her a home.. Once she is sleeping, in about 1 1/2 hours she will be easy to get.. If you don't get her just put a Tupperware full of water & some kitchen scraps out for her.. At least untill someone get a hold of her. Post a photo if you can..

:welcome

How do you store your hatching eggs prior to setting?  My quail are starting to lay and are much more consistent layers than my chickens now that the heat is here.  They usually lay in the afternoon so I'm out collecting eggs often because of the heat.  I'll wait a few weeks while I separate out breeding groups from the colony pens but I'm not sure how to store their eggs until I set them and I think the fridge is too cold. Is ambient valley room temperature to warm?

I use a "Red Wine Fridge". It doesn't get as cold as a standard household fridge. I remember checking the temp when I got it and thinking "this is perfect for eggs!" But I could not tell you now what that temp was, but works well for me. I *think* Red wine is supposed to be stored at 65* but I'm not a wine drinker, so its perfect for eggs. Now if I could only get an egg turner in it!

Huh, you are funny!! :lau

One other thing to think about, if you do keep her she will lay an egg a day for ya.. Eat the scorpions, weeds, fertilize your yard.. Good investment if you don't find the owner..

I'm beat!
Spent the day stringing electric fence wire all day, crawling through places men weren't meant to go. While at work last night, my dog tried to dig under the fence of my chicken run. He did not succeed, but came close enough to terrify the chooks. Last night when I found the damage, I thought I might trench around the run and put in a concrete footer. Lots of digging involved, and I'm allergic to work. Decided to electrify the fence instead as the lesser of two evils. There is a new Tractor Supply about 15 miles south of me, so I decided to check it out (they just opened this store 5-10). To my pleasant surprise, they had everything I needed in stock, and the bill was less than $100 (barely). Now, if they would do installation, too....
Got all the wire strung and insulated, feeder cable and ground cable installed. In the AM, will install a new junction box where I plan on installing the fence controller, then we'll go LIVE!

P.S. if the lights go out in Tucson tomorrow morning, will somebody feed my chickens?
