Arizona Chickens

Newbie on BYC here - I am curious about raising chickens but don't own any myself. I'm posting to inform Scottsdale area chicken owners that there is a lost or loose chicken (red/brown hen) in the area around the southwest corner of Mountain View and Hayden Road on Scottsdale. It is hiding behind a large juniper bush at the moment. Hopefully her owner will find her or a good Samaritan will pick her up.
You get the hen yet? She'll prob just let you walk up and get her no problem.

I have the bulb at 3' and only pointed at the box. It was 90 where the light hit. I put the thermometer on the bottom.
But ALL is Well this morning and active like they should be....... Maybe they were overly tired from the store. Who knows.
It really is confusing...... a hatchery website said to keep them at 100 for the first week, then 90 for week to, then drop 5 degrees every week to 75.
My house is never 75 except in the winter.

I even said that putting a regular bulb over them would kill them. sigh........
But most important, I got great advice here and the little peeps survived the night.
I'm thinking they aren't a week old. When I asked she said about a week and said they get a couple shipments a week.

I use 2 places to check temperature. One right under the element (reptile heater) another a couple feet away. I provide a shallow box for them and they seem to like it, placing it near but not under the heat. I have had Mamma Hen out in 60 degree weather with her brood and they did fine. She would be ready to warm them up often. As a rule 100/95, 95/90, 90/85.... Is a good guide line, until feathers come in, 6 - 7 weeks on average. The age CX go to market, That always shocks me. I look at them and think about the ones we eat are not much older. Well... Some of us eat, the un-lucky us that can not for one reason or another raise our own meat chickens.

There are a no of laments that have those symptoms. There are members, that as soon as they read your post will be able to help you. It is serious, how bad I can not say, but we have help here. Do you have yogurt?, or vitamin supplements? Electrolights? Can't hurt.

yeah i'm waiting for the likes of Maryhysong - Desertmarcy - Sonoran Silkies etc, to chime in here & help a brother out. I do have electrolites around here somewhere. I just hate medicating something until I know what is wrong with it. Am I being overly cautious here?

Sorry, typo. THERE ARE MANY AILMENTS...

Hiyas! Been a while. Life's been crazy around here with illness, death in the family, work, vacations. BUT my new babies arrived on Tuesday and I'm so happy. I ordered though Mypetchicken back in Dec. Here are the new girls. Silver Laced Polish Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Blue Orpington White Silkie Still thinking of names. I think the silkie will be named Bunny though. My pop pop used to call my Gram that and she just passed away a couple weeks ago and I think it's fitting. Hope everyone is doing well
:love Nothing more to say... Love peep pics

Most of ya all have chickens, but now that we have been turned on to a baby duck that was hand raised, follows us around everywhere.. In & out of the house, so flipp'!N cute.. We put a hose on some rocks & "she" is loving it.. She is digging for bugs.. The whole flock has not has one problem with her... What a delight.. We already had a pump with a long hose to clean out her "pond" really just a 20 gallon bucket.. Untill we decide where to put in a more permanent pond.. Yeah pond.. Can you imagine that.. I can ... Farm fresh eggs from our own duck.. Huh, who ever thought?
We just need to get another mate for her that is a excellent layer.. We will know in about 2-3 weeks weather or not we have a drake..
It is so fun to watch her dive in the "pond" oh & did I mention duck eggs are more nutritious ?? That is what I have heard.. Need to research on that subject... We have a few people looking for us.. Hope to post photos of then all soon..
Hey I am picking up 2 new Cayuga ducklings in the morning. I am so excited. :)

NoSkiveez mite comment makes a lot of sense. Have you checked the birds for mites or lice? Mites can weaken a bird quickly. (Learned that the hard way.)

Poultry ticks will weaken a bird quickly too. They carry a toxin in their saliva that can cause paralysis, characterized by progressive ascending paralysis of the leg, wing and respiratory system.
