Arizona Chickens

Sad day here. My neighbor called while I was out to tell me my chickens were in his yard. Very unusual. He went to investigate, and discovered a massacre in progress. Two dogs had broken into the yard and had killed several chickens. They would have killed more but my neighbor threw enough rocks at the dogs to move them out of the yard. Out of 26 chickens six are dead, two are injured, 12 are frightened but seem ok, and the rest are missing. There were dead birds under the back deck, dead birds in the coop, and dead birds under the front deck. The six dead birds included all five of my most-promising birds - offspring of a cock no longer with us, so I can't reproduce them.

I am proud of the six birds that went into the neighbor's yard and got away. We had a time herding them back into my yard. Smart birds.

The up side is my feed bill will go down for a while. Sigh.

So sorry to hear of this.

So sad :hugs Coyotes are hunting and hungry, but dogs just kill. The chase, the kill, then what to a dog. They look for the next. Coyotes head for home, sometimes hungry pups to feed.

The six dead birds are fertilizing the fallow section of the garden. One of the injured birds can't walk. She is resting in a kennel in the house. I don't see any obvious external injuries but her feathers were mangled. Hope she just needs some quiet time. She is snoring, which may not be a good sign. We'll see how she does over the next day or two.

guess I'm just sad and disappointed.
there is a breeder on CL that has Cayugas and several other varieties of ducks. he advertises in phx, tucson and a few other cities. i believe he works up here in phx but has his main farm down in wilcox. i have gotten loads of hatching eggs from him including Cayugas. he also sells ducklings, but they are pricey so i go the hatching route.

i suppose with CL you have to be very wary of who you are dealing with as well as any forum including FB groups. you don't know these people and just because they have animals doesn't mean they are ethical or even nice. i sell ducklings at times, i always state where they are from, i sell silkies too and again, where they are from(they happen to be from my birds now, yay go me). i never agree to hold anything for anyone because then they never show. i don't have time to wait around for that. i wouldn't expect someone to wait for me. i am super busy. if it's important to me, I'll make it work. If not, wasn't meant to be.

ive seen some breeders on craigslist but if they are not local i am wary. who knows i guess there are unethical ppl everywhere. i was most upset to drive all the way there and expect to get my Cayugas just to find out she sold one. she could have mentioned that at any time when I text her during the day on Fri.

I am still looking for 2 more Cayugas breeding quality. (someday show quality i hope). I am going to research more I am just not sure HOW you research individual people if no one says they have had issues previously. This person also sells chicks, ducklings and turkeys via FB and CL and the feed store.

Anyway lesson learned.

I am on the hunt for a few breed/show quality buff Ameraucanas and some breed/show quality Silkies in the near future but not quite yet (I have to build a coop). I have some silkies but I am planning on a show girl project so I need good quality stock and the others will get put out to pasture and get to live their life out on the farm. :) If anyone knows of someone who has chicks or eggs or juveniles of these breeds PM me. Like I said I am not in a hurry just a soon. :)

Thank you all for being so understanding while I went through this crazy experience and ty for all the good advice.
