Arizona Chickens

Hi, I joined BYC yesterday a week after getting some new chicks to add to my existing flock. I work in Tucson but live outside Benson. I have read the last dozen or so pages of this thread. So many cute chicks, beautiful chickens, and tragic losses. I am looking forward to being active on BYC.

Welcome! Lots of good folks here and good information.

So my broody did not hatch a thing. Not one. I know they are futile because we had some eggs under our nest boxes and they had blood spots before we found them.
My other hens do lay in her nest. Im thinking of fencing her off with food and water for her and see if we get chicks this time.
Also the only hens I have going broody are not my silkies nope its my blue Ameraucanas. I read they are not a broody breed. Hmmm I have my second blue that started being broody yesterday.

Anyone have good stock silkies eggs for sale in Tucson area?

Blood spots does not mean they are fertile.

Welcome Analog!!!
This is a great community of chicken lovers. I am in Tucson. Wow what a drive you have.
What kind of chickens do you have?

I have 5 hens who are four years old: 3 Easter Eggers and 2 New Hampshire. I have a 3 year old NH rooster. I have 4 mixed hens and 4 mixed roosters (half Barred Rock and half NH or EE). These 8 are a year old and the offspring of Mr. Milquetoast, the BR rooster in my avatar who passed away recently. I have another year old BR rooster who was donated by the farmer who hatched my hens eggs for me. Finally I have 14 one week old chicks: 4 straight run white Silkies, 2 BR pullets, and 8 NH pullets.

I have a longer description in the introduction thread Hi from Anna and her chickens in Arizona

Hello everyone,
I am hoping one of you all would or could be able to help. I am interested in adopting Bonnie's (LadyKotaDoria) hens but need some help getting them from Phoenix to Tucson. If anyone is traveling between the two soon and could taxi the ladies for us we would both be very appreciative. I have a dog crate that could be used if needed and can pick them up anywhere in Tucson, unfortunately my car has been acting up lately and I am weary about it making a trip to Phoenix. I am still looking into other alternatives, but figured I would ask for help on here as well.

Thank you
Rosie

So one of my chicks turned out to be a rooster! He was the nicest and prettiest of the bunch so imma keep him :)

A good rooster can be a valuable addition to the flock. Mr. Milquetoast, in my avatar, would call us if we were late letting the hens out to free-range, watch over them, sound the alarm when hawks were around, and round up the hens before sunset and herd them into the coop. We miss him a lot.

It took a couple of days, but the girls finally figured out the mister! Now that's their favorite corner!
We have misters around all the outdoor pens and another on the roof of the coop. They help a lot. The chickens love those and the shade cloth. However, my NH rooster hackle feathers get frizzy in the summer, I think from the misters. I am going to try coconut oil on them to see if that helps. Anyone else have this problem? How did you solve it?
