Arizona Chickens

Well, my dream of having chickens keeps being pushed aside by destiny!
First we had to move RIGHT when I had saved a little money to build a coop. Now that we are settled in the new house with a huge backyard (by settled, I mean unpacking boxes until 2050), my funds are almost all gone.
So, what's a girl to do but re-think my glorious coop plans, downsize it a LOT and beg destiny for mercy?

Here's my CL ad. See if anyone of you kind-chicken-lover-souls out there can scratch your heads for a minute and help me with suggestions:

"We are building a chicken coop and need to buy some materials, but wanted to try to use recycled materials and to give the business to someone local instead ob the big construction warehouses.
We are obviously wanting to build on a limited budget, after all, the chickens couldn't care less what their house looks like!
So, if you have any chicken wire, 4x4, 2x4 wood, ply wood panels, the wheels (or something with wheels), etc (see the picture of the coop we are building to see if you have any of these materials).
Also, we are not proud people, we will accept generous donations.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!"

I'm in N Gilbert/ S Mesa, by the way.

Oh no! Sheriff Joe is a real cat lover. Better be more careful than that. Catch them in a trap. then enclose the trap with a large garbage bag closed around a hose connected to the lawn mower. Start the machine and let it run for about ten minutes.

Do this the night before the scheduled garbage collection.

Monhonri - I worry a little about cats and the chickens. Was it after dark when the cat got them? Did the cat go inside the coop and get them? I am trying to better understand the risks.

Mohonri/Rufus - I am can understand the thought about doing the cat in, but am sure I am not the only forum member that is a little uncomfortable with the thought. I am a big cat lover and though now mine is indoor only, my heart breaks for the cat owner who might lose a friend. That said, I know it hard to find the right balance and there is a need to protect our flocks. I have a neighbor who has too many strays and I wonder how soon they are going to be a problem and how to judiciously handle the whole thing. Good luck sorting it all out.

Joel/Sock - Congrats on getting/re-homing the mother hen and babies.

Dede - good luck. Sending you a pm about my coops.

Sadly, so many people have lost their homes and left their animals behind. My neighborhood is over run with strays. If they have to be put down, it should be in the most painless manner.

I would hate to see Monhonri on Sheriff Joe's chain gang.

I would definitely go for the traps becuase who knows what else you may kill (wild) with the poison. To be honest I would be ripping head off and throwing barbed wire everywhere if a cat ate my chicks though. All in all it is your property that is being lost! I hope that the rest of your flock is safe Mahonri! <3

Man oh man, you guys have so many broodies. I'm so jealous! Which is strange considering I just bought two chicks. Chicken greed?

I ran out of oatmeal so i tried to bring my chickens Lucky Charms. Nope, they weren't having it. They are finding that they can nest anywhere with the straw though. I think they really like that. Then I took the rabbit out today to play in the run and the coop with the chickens. She had a blast and loved the room to run. With the straw down and the big metal cage I picked up a few days ago I feel really good about putting her out there when the weather cools. I'm certain she would love it too since even the cage is very larger. Much larger than her inside cage. My chooks were frightened by her (in all her scary tininess!) but they calmed down after a while.

This may be a little gross...but does anyone know home remedies for UTI (urinary tract infections)? I was born with a kink in my urethra and I get UTIs at least three times a year. I have another one right now and it cost quite a bit for the anti-biotics. Right now I'm drinking as much water as I can handle, drinking acidic juices and popping vitamin C chewables. Sorry if this gross, again! :<

HAVE AN AWESOME CHICKEN DAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

Hello fellow chicken lovers in Arizona. I am fairly new to this forum and very new to chickens. We live in Mesa and currently have 3 chicks about 10 wks old and 2 more that are about 5 wks old. (Couldn't stop at 3!! Hooked already) It is great to know so many folks here in the area are raising chickens at home and I look forward to learning as much as possible from all of you. Thanks in advance for any and all help and advise.

Check out our coop under the coop section and let me know what you think..... "Arizona Playhouse Coop"

Here is Miss Basil Blue that I picked up from SockPuppet. She and the chicks seem to like it quite well here so far, my other girls are still trying to figure out how to not make mama upset:). I will be interesting to see what those chicks turn out like, Darlene says the two light ones came from green eggs they are a little yellow and one is starting to get green legs and the black one came from a white egg it has a gold dot on its head and gold on its wings. They look pulletish to me so far.
