Arizona Chickens

Theres plenty of places that will sell you a quarter or a half cow.  Heres one I was considering a while back.  http://www.datecreekranch.com/  Im hoping to have pigs ready for processing within the year, Ill keep you in mind.
Thank you. I can't wait til I can raise my own food again. I use to raise them and split them with a neighbor. How long have you been doing it? What breed(s) are you raising?

This will be my first time. I am thinking of American yorkshire or berkshire, maybe both. If you have some experience in it I would love to hear from you, shoot me a pm.

Good Morning. Does anyone know where a Slaughter House or Processing place is for beef? I know they're around but can't find them. I'm wanting to buy Green Tripe for my dogs. There are lots of internet ways to get it, but I prefer fresh. Also do any of you guys ever or would you ever be interested in splitting a Cow or Hog?

I'm a Berkshire fan. Easy to handle and good growers. There are some on CL right now. After the move I will look into it and see what our best option is here. We can do a Beef Cow as well. Split it 2,3 or 4 ways so options are open.

@Demosthine would know the name of the farmer that does a certain order of pasture feeding, cow, sheep, chicken then duck.. The order is important.. Don't recall the name, however I will look it up if he does not join in...

Thanks to @moms3cuties ! I had a great visit with her a couple of days ago. Her Mesa yard is an urban jungle of edible plants and she sent me home with an armful or two of cuttings, fruit and seeds. Yum! It was also fun to see her chickens and turkey and how she has them set up to handle the heat of summer. I think my DH wanted to smuggle her turkey out of her yard, he really liked that bird. I can see a turkey now in our future.

ooohh my friend just got turkeys and has chicks at my house . They are the Royal Palm. You interested??
How old? They do metamorphosis quickly.. I am trying to take lots of photos..

Those Scovies are about 6 wks now. Yes thay have already changed soooo much!!
It's the extra calcium in the layer that isn't good for the youngsters. The higher protein is actually good for the growing birds.
Marcy did you get a chance to contact that person on FB that was looking for older birds for sale?

Hi, my name is Tanya. I live in North Central Phoenix (AZ).

In May 2014 we adopted 3 chicks from my daughter's kindergarten classroom that they had hatched from eggs. We had been wanting chickens, so we thought it would be perfect. We even built them a brand new coop that attaches to the outside wall of our home, which happens to be the outside wall to 2 bedrooms. We also fenced off about 1/4 of our backyard for a chicken run.

Well, turns out, ALL three chicks are ROOSTERS!! It happens to be illegal in Phoenix to have roosters. :( We love them, they are gorgeous, but they are VERY loud, especially when they all 3 crow AT THE SAME EXACT TIME! We were told that they are Aloha chickens, which happen to be a new breed made here in Arizona. To me, a novice, it looks like 2 are Alohas and 1 is a Rhode Island Red. One Aloha is quiet large, although smaller than the RIR, but the other is a little pipsqueak. The little one is the loudest though and very talkative. :(

Once we started to suspect they were roosters, we did go to Pratt's, the local feed store, and get 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks. They are all hens, thankfully.

So, I've been reading the forums, looking for advice on keeping chickens healthy here in AZ and, once I can, will be probably posting a thread in the Re-homing section. :(

My children, hens, husband, and I will be sad to see the roosters go. They have been hand raised, hand fed, and held everyday, so they are very friendly. They will even sit down next to you or on your lap if you sit down in their run for long enough.
Have you contacted Sommer in the Aloha thread to see if she can use any of them in her project? Just look up Aloha Project. :)

Hey Daave I will be raising hogs starting this spring and I will be willing to let people buy them from me. I will raise them up, they pay for feed, water and processing or if they choose a per pound on the hoof rate. i will allow half pig shares. :)

I plan on raising red waddles its a heritage breed. They say its meat is spectacular. At least they will be half red waddle and if I cannot find 2 unrelated here in AZ (as they are on the conservation endangered list). I am not sure what the other breed will be. I will also be getting a dexter cow or a mini Jersey and breed her to a dexter for beef. I miss having my own meat animals.
