Normal, especially for new layers.  Are you feeding them layer feed and supplying extra calcium for when they want it?

just bought the layer feed today actually.. they were on starter/grower..planned on mixing it... and i figured out who did the shelless egg its my newest layer... this was supposed to be her 5th egg

Well crud, I did feed some chicks layer feed for a few weeks.. Augh.. I hope the babies don't have long term effects.. we have various ages lately, we plan on buying starter chick feed & just have the oyster shell available.. We normally have the oyster shell all the time. Or I have been thinking of making our own feed.. We do love the blue sky, sometimes we run out. That is where the problem starts.. :th
. I did misplace the 50 pd bad.. It had broke open so we put in a black trash bad. Out of site, out, of mind. Read up on this & give your imput, those of you that have more expierence..
Just a newbie..

I missed your post.. & possibly others.. Where did you get the chicken? & what?

Lol!

Seriously! It's just too weird. We've had our chickens from the time they were day old chicks, so this is something she got herself into the day I found it on her. They are all about 11 months old now, so she must have been scratching around in something that had this piece of plastic in it and it got wrapped around her leg. It was just so funny... and a little bit morbid.

Keep me posted on any beef/pork shares in the future. We bought 1/4 beef last year from www.huwareserve.com but their prices have skyrocketed lately. We have also bought from www.doublecheckranch.com as they come to several of the valley farmer's markets.

I checked out Date Creek too. Sounds great, good prices. I read all the posts even though it only takes a day or two to get WAY behind!

I now have the seed box and will return it when I come back to the Valley to meet my newly born Granddaughter. She is due on Sept. 9 and I am thinking we will be down within a week or two of her arrival. Let me know whoever wants it and we'll make arrangements to get it in your hands.

@girlchick do you want the seed box before I go back down to Phoenix? You're not that far from me, we could arrange to meet but then it would have to get back down there at some point.
Good luck with your hatch, please let us know how it goes.

I have a pecking chicken too. I posted on here and most people recommended making her into soup. She is the only one who does it and she is very deliberate about it and would even draw blood. I tried all the methods, holding her down and pinching her beak; leaving her in the coop when everyone else got to go out to free range; "pecking" her back by flicking her with my finger; giving her a good swift kick when she did it. Nothing worked. She hasn't pecked me in a few months, but she gets this look in her eye and starts to go after me, then looks at me and changes her mind. I make sure I never turn my back on her and if I need to walk by her, I skirt around a little. I only have 4 girls all raised together from chicks and they are very spoiled. She has no reason to peck me. I think she is just a bully. I don't have much of a pecking order but I have seen her peck a couple of the others on a rare occasion.

We have been enjoying the cooler temps this August and it looks as if it will remain that way for at least the next week or so. We are used to seeing 114+ days and 92 for lows this month but so far we're not anywhere near that. It's supposed to be maybe 108 or 109 by the end of this week but that's still not too bad. I think my girls are having a bit of a molt. I have 2 with no neck feathers and one who has a bunch of new feathers that are really light, she is almost mottled red/white right now. They will be one year old around the 25th of September. I was so worried about them making it through the summer but the end is on the horizon and they have done so well! I'm really pleased.

I only had one day when I got no eggs at all. Some days 1, most days 2. Last week I got 4 eggs in one day! It's been a while since that happened.

VOLTAGE CHECK - GOOD!
Just finished feeding and watering the chickens this morning, stepped out the gate and saw one of those big green June bugs flying around the outside of the run. Tried to catch it, and accidentally contacted the wrong wire, about knocked me on my butt. Was wondering if it was still working - question answered!
I have a Plymouth barred rock, probably the smallest chicken I have, but also the quickest. When a June bug does get into the run, 99 times out of a hundred, she is the winner. Everybody else is chasing her around, but I've never seen her lose one yet.

Working on my brooder, almost done. The chick's love it.
That's a beauty - won't last long for the chicks though - they will be perching on top of that rain within the week!!! Just my experience. I've used a baby playpen and by the time they are three or four weeks old they are trying to fly up to perch on the edges of the playpen!! Its a beauty though - and will be much easier to clean than the playpen!!! Enjoy.
