Arizona Chickens

We miss all the eggs too.. If we had leghorns, they go all year.. Our production red is still laying..
Actually I plan on doing a fire tonight.. I don't want to wait till October.. I have invited some neighbors over for tea or drinks plus a
Full moon.. Roasted marshmallow's.. Yum

I have eggs coming out the wazoo up here. 10-12 per day. Sold 8 doz. last week but they're piling up fast again.

I noticed that your chick pen seems to be in the house. How long do you keep them in the house, if that's the case? I got jumped on royally on another forum for keeping chicks in the house. Albeit they stayed in longer than I intended but I was recovering from open heart surgery and my husband was unable to fix the coop in order to put them outside with the bigger chickens.
why would they jump on you for having chickens in the house? I have had them in the house over 2 months due to circumstances. I have had adults in the house as well. That is crazy anyone would "jump" onto you for that. I am sry.

Yes, for real. I think I touched it with both hands and got a circuit through my arms. Wire is on the outside of the run where the chickens can't touch it.

Really, I'm OK. The lysdexia is not a new thing.

I really hope you are ok. That is scary to have that much electricity coming through you. My oldest son went to unplug an extension cord I did not know the dogs had chewed it and he got a good zap. scared us all pretty good. He was ok, scared but ok. Be careful. was this at the new house where the girl is or at your old house? better tto have someone around.

I have about half my girls that are old enough laying. I really believe my feed make up keeps them laying. The ones that went broody and hatched chicks refuse to lay even thousg said chicks are 1-2 months old.

. I do not think next year we will allow broodies.
YIPPEE!!! First one has hatched and is peeping and moving all over the place. It's a Black Copper Marans. I will take pics when the chick moves into a good spot under the window. It's still real wet. The other pipped egg is an Ameracauna. This is SO cool I'm about to pop. LOL

Sweet. What I usually do is find a few options and then we can all decide on which one we'll go with. Glad I found this group with like minded people. It's much cheaper and better quality buying from these other resources.

Annoys me when people speak nasty to others or judge people on the forums. Just people with nothing better to do.

I wish. Can't wait til I get my first.

ooohh my friend just got turkeys and has chicks at my house . They are the Royal Palm. You interested??

Those Scovies are about 6 wks now. Yes thay have already changed soooo much!!
Marcy did you get a chance to contact that person on FB that was looking for older birds for sale?

Have you contacted Sommer in the Aloha thread to see if she can use any of them in her project? Just look up Aloha Project.  :)
a turkey would be nice! I wonder if DesertMarcy still has some turkeys for sale?

I'll buy some beef too! I just need to know a month or two in advance so let me know ladies and gents! :)

Thanks to everyone that replied about low egg production in the summer.  Relieved it is just the heat and also sad that it is the heat.  We give them oyster shell but I might add a little more.

My poor girls.  I do a lot of apologizing to them for how hot it is :(

51 days until October....not that I'm counting.
lol, out of my hens,, I guess it would be seven total, four of them are teenagers that just started to lay eggs and I only get maybe 3- 5 eggs per day.my white Leghorns lay faithfully every day! :D

By the way, , is the beef fed with organic feed? The one we'll buy & split together?

@K9Dave, I'll give you some eggs while you're waiting for your chicks to become hens.

@chickgirl......CongraduEGGtions! ;)

@K9Dave what I do- is if the person buys a pig or cow and wants me to raise it because I have the space or they want fresh meat but don't want to bond with it then They pay for the whole animal and bring it here. I divide the cost by how many people are in on it. My half of the live animal is used to cover the care (any shots and or medical needs, water, shelter, etc) and water of said animal for however many months until it goes to processing. I pay for half the feed until it is processed. I know someone who does the processing and is reasonable. we let him know what we want from each of our individual quarters/halves and it comes to us already divided up with the cuts we each want. Does this make sense? I have split 2 pigs and 1 steer and it worked out great.

and how I feed is all the hay a cow can eat including grass and alfalfa both daily. fresh veggies when avail and the last month they need to be corn fed. If the calf is young and I can get to stay on milk (and I have goat milk avail) then I keep them in goat milk. They grow faster and its lean meat. The corn is needed at the end for marbling. takes 12-18 months to raise from weanling up.

pigs- I feed only goat milk and veggie and fruit scraps (I will NOT give them meat products or scraps). all they can eat milk. whey if I have it. At the end they get a month of corn to marble the meat. takes 4-6 months on a pig. They also get hay.

I need a month as well as it's like buying your meat for half a year at 1 time. I need a freezer too. There are some for free in CL sometimes but they're all far away from me, and you have to be FAST.

OK, let's try making a list here and see what route everyone wants to go, once the list has been comprised.

All of our decisions will be made later but I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the meat should be Organic GMO free. Also ideas for where/what (I.e. @a little chiken)we purchase and what it's fed, decided later as well.

Add your name to the list please if you are INTERESTED in splitting any of the following.

@kpgoldstar- Pig, Cow

As far as I know the Alfalfa is GMO free. Now to get corn at the end I have no idea. but if anyone makes beer we can use the distilled corn. just remember it is not cheap to raise animals to slaughter and big AG gets a cut discount to slaughter and for production. Individual people do not get discounts. I have only ever given one shot to a steer with a stuffy nose out of 8 hogs and 2 steers. I try not go buy animals with out any medications or wormers but that is just me. they all have a withdrawl time. Just something to keep in mind. Also dairy breeds take longer than meat breeds. Hope this helps. :)

edited to say my last steer cost me from start to finish $4.76 lb and my last pig was $1.49 lb
