Arizona Chickens

@K9Dave what I do- is if the person buys a pig or cow and wants me to raise it because I have the space or they want fresh meat but don't want to bond with it then They pay for the whole animal and bring it here. I divide the cost by how many people are in on it. My half of the live animal is used to cover the care (any shots and or medical needs, water, shelter, etc) and water of said animal for however many months until it goes to processing. I pay for half the feed until it is processed. I know someone who does the processing and is reasonable. we let him know what we want from each of our individual quarters/halves and it comes to us already divided up with the cuts we each want. Does this make sense? I have split 2 pigs and 1 steer and it worked out great.

and how I feed is all the hay a cow can eat including grass and alfalfa both daily. fresh veggies when avail and the last month they need to be corn fed. If the calf is young and I can get to stay on milk (and I have goat milk avail) then I keep them in goat milk. They grow faster and its lean meat. The corn is needed at the end for marbling. takes 12-18 months to raise from weanling up.

pigs- I feed only goat milk and veggie and fruit scraps (I will NOT give them meat products or scraps). all they can eat milk. whey if I have it. At the end they get a month of corn to marble the meat. takes 4-6 months on a pig. They also get hay.

I need a month as well as it's like buying your meat for half a year at 1 time. I need a freezer too. There are some for free in CL sometimes but they're all far away from me, and you have to be FAST.

OK, let's try making a list here and see what route everyone wants to go, once the list has been comprised.

All of our decisions will be made later but I think I can speak for everyone when I say that the meat should be Organic GMO free. Also ideas for where/what (I.e. @a little chiken )we purchase and what it's fed, decided later as well.

Add your name to the list please if you are INTERESTED in splitting any of the following.

Add us to the list, we are total noobs when it comes to this but it is something we have always talked about doing.

I noticed that your chick pen seems to be in the house.  How long do you keep them in the house, if that's the case?  I got jumped on royally on another forum for keeping chicks in the house.  Albeit they stayed in longer than I intended but I was recovering from open heart surgery and my husband was unable to fix the coop in order to put them outside with the bigger chickens.

why would they jump on you for having chickens in the house? I have had them in the house over 2 months due to circumstances. I have had adults in the house as well. That is crazy anyone would "jump" onto you for that. I am sry. :idunno

Some people. :idunno
We have had chicken's & the duck's inside.

a turkey would be nice! I wonder if DesertMarcy still has some turkeys for sale?

I'll buy some beef too! I just need to know a month or two in advance so let me know ladies and gents! :)

We will go in on a 1/4 cow or 1/5

No, you said your bottom. Is that ok? :lau or really your hip, if you indeed fell.. ?

I am more versed in female anatomy, but I'm fairly certain it was my butt. You wanna see my bruise?
:lau

Oh shoot, you did fall.. Sorry to hear about it.. Use ARNICARE on your bruise.. It takes the blood & puts in back into your blood stream.. Reduces swelling & pain..

Really, I'm OK, just kind of a SHOCK, if you know what I mean. When I first installed the fence, I tested it with one finger, got a snap like a healthy static shock, what I got yesterday was several magnitudes greater. SURPRISE! The amount of current you get is directly affected by how well you are electrically grounded, and im guessing I was well grounded.

They seemed to be upset that anyone would be stupid enough to keep chicks in the house because they need to be out in the dirt to develop an immune system against all the bacteria in the ground. They seem to think that my birds would not develop as well or reach their full potential. I have not had any problems with that. This person seems to feel they are the self-appointed expert on this forum and nobody else really knows what they're doing. Can't stand know-it-alls that want to make sure you know they know it all. They were mostly upset over cocci which we don't have in our soil up here and not too many places since it is a wet area bacteria and we're really arid. Not saying it"s not here at all but not so much as in the wetter states.
