RIP Ella. My little Leghorn had just started laying last week - and was presenting us with 55-60 gram eggs every day since. This morning when I went to see how the girls fared through yet another rain storm last night, she was on the floor of the coop in total rigor. There was no evidence of any external culprit. Yesterday, she was fine - laid her egg around noon, was eating (including blueberries out of the hand) and drinking. I've lost hens before, but both times they were acting a bit "off" beforehand, so their deaths didn't come as a total shock like this one did.

I'm sorry to hear that. So sudden too.

Congratulations!  Did she lay it on the counter top?  

Oh how I wish. The possibilities are endless if I can train her to do that now. The frying pan will be next after that.

I have been thinking about getting a few geese come springtime. I couldn't decide between Toulouse or Embdens, but I was just looking at Metzer Farms (a BYC sponsor), and I think I've decided to go with the Embdens. Anybody on this thread have any geese?

I have a friend in Tucson that has a nice female goose for sale reasonable.

I'm no expert on geese.

I was just looking at the quail thread and they were discussing dust baths. It was also said that if the birds are on the ground then they have to be wormed.

Is this still true in the Phoenix area? I've never seen a worm in our dust dry dirt. -not to mention it usually takes a jackhammer to dig through it anyway.

I was hoping to keep the quail in a walk-in aviary with a bare dirt floor. Will I have to worm my quail? (don't have any birds yet)

You would not see worms in the dirt. They would be picking up worm eggs that are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Likely sloughed by wild Quail, birds, chickens, or the quail themselves.
