Arizona Chickens

Looks like the monsoon is not ready to give up yet, although this is atypical monsoon pattern. Yesterday I finally finished cleaning out all the pens in my poultry house, thank goodness before more rain but I am wondering if my pens are ever going to dry out again. And I got another load of 8 yards of sand so I have some material to put down in areas of the pens where there are big pits dug out and also under the nipple waterers where it is wet all the time from so many birds drinking, but the sand that was delivered is wet too.

My birds must not be the brightest. Their coop is built up just a few inches off the ground so all is dry although most of the yard is flooded but instead of staying in the coop half of them are standing out in the rain. The funniest was the silkie:
On a normal day...
400

Like a drowned rat in the rain...
400

He/she kept shaking to get the water off....news flash, bird, your coop is nice and dry!!!

She is so cute.. They get excited over rain..

My chickens love to scratch around in wet soul but look angry when they are wet themselves.

I hope they find tons of worms, free chciken food.. Our run is still 2" in water.. The ducks are out in the front yard somewhere, I'm trying to rest from working on the property moving water.. Man once the buckets are full of water they are hard to move. I finally asked our 16 year old to help shovel water with a large broom, into the street.. He was winning that he was getting blister's. I told him I'm gona give him a blister, then called him a wimp.. :barnie what's so funny about him, is that he is a hard worker.. I think since all his friends were playing hookie, he wanted to go hang out.. But man, it was crazy on those streets then..

So today between rain storms I went out and checked the chickens. All the big hens are out in the back yard under a big mesquite. I was doing a basic check to make sure they were all there... 2 Brahamas, check. 4 Wheatens, check. 2 Ameracauna Roosters, check and on down the line to the 2 Barred Rocks. I count one two three. Wait was that one the cuckoo Maran? Nope she is with her buddies. One two three WTH? Somehow I acquired a barred Rock cockrel.

Thank you for the information. Do you know the approximate geographical area that has been having an outbreak?

From what I'm reading it appears to be the midwest. I'm guessing because it is wetter (with the exception of today) climate, the organism thrives there? Kind of like we don't have to worry about m-worm with camelids in the southwest but midwest has to worm every month.

Have they sad anything about if a chicken has it, will they always have it?

Yes. You can treat it with antibiotics but it will always be a carrier which is why breeders are encouraged, and in some states forced, to cull. I don't know what our state law is on this, will have to delve deeper.

I've been cleaning up since 5 this morning. Got over 4" according to the rain gauge. The youngsters apparently were in a low spot, didn't look low until today with all the water. They were all on the highest roost with the water about 2" below them. Had to pick them up one at a time & relocate to the hay barn until the coop I use for isolation purposes got prepped. Found out gophers dug through part of my berm causing the flooding into the youngster's coop. Fixed the berm & I was soaked to the skin by the time I was done. DH picked a great time to fly out for a business trip. More clean up awaits me but the chickens all seemed to be enjoying the rain. The polish look especially funny soaking wet!
