Arizona Chickens

We followed our daughter and the grandkids here 10 years ago. I had lost my job in WA and my husband was going to lose his, so we figured Arizona was a good option. Both of our sons were in the Army at the time and have since ETSed and now they and their families all live here, too (except the oldest grandson who is stationed near Pensacola FL in the Air Force). But we are all (except for the S-I-L and D-I-L) from up north. It's not that I want to go back to snowy winters, though - I just want someplace moderate. Kind-of looking at the southeast (Carolinas, Tenn, Georgia, FL) - why not, since it's the only corner of the country we haven't lived in!!

I hadn't thought to look on Facebook for gardening help. Thanks for the pointer.
That's why I love it up here. I came from Indiana and this is the closets climate and greenery to that. Even Indiana is hotter than it gets up here and grass grows naturally. Cool and shady and always a small breeze. Can sit out on the patio even when it gets into the 80's and it's cool. Not like the southern region of AZ where it's even hot in the shade and feels like an oven when you go outside. Lived in Phx for about 19 years and finally got to move up here and we've been here for 19 years. Wouldn't move back down there for all the money in the world and gardens do really great in this region. The snow is minimal in the winter and the temperature is moderate to the point that you don't need a coat in the warmer part of the day in the winter but we do have the distinct change of seasons like the mid-west. Love it, love it, love it.

Las Vegas is really, really far away! I grew up in Connecticut, just about halfway between Boston and New York--2 hours in either direction. 3 hours is about the max I can drive without losing my mind ... unless I have another driver. I don't mind being in the car. I just hate driving. How far is Vegas from Tucson? 10 hours? If I left my home in Old Lyme, CT, in 10-11 hours, I could be:

  1. Going south: Cape Hatteras, NC (the Outer Banks and the beaches)
  2. Going north: the middle of some remote tundra in central Ontario, about halfway to Hudson, Bay (Montreal is only 6 hours. Excellent skiing in VT only 3-4 hours)
  3. Going west: Cleveland, OH

Going to central Maine (Down East) when I was kid to see my uncle was a rough trip! 4 hours! I guess when you are brought up with short car rides and excellent trains to the cities, you get a bit spoiled.

He probably assumes you are in Phoenix which is only a 4 hour drive and many people travel between Vegas and Phoenix on a regular basis. It is only about 6 hours from Tucson to Vegas, btw.

A whole 'nother option for retirement!! Staying in Arizona but moving up north was never even on the radar! I can't wait until we can retire, but I'm glad we still have plenty of time to consider a growing number of options!

So what you're saying is you all have the same lawyer.. As soon as he pulls you over you flip him the card??

A little off the topic of chickens, but nothing says there can't be open conversation here.

If he isn't on the ride with us he is only a phone call away. He even has bandannas printed up with his contact info and the most common laws that affect motorcycle enthusiasts here locally. Feels good to have someone to go to when we are treated wrong for just being a bunch of Veteran Marines who like to ride. This is an example of how we are treated sometimes here and how they are being changed: http://klas.videodownload.worldnow.com/klas_20140906002643620AA.mp4

I miss the AZ Chickens people and information sharing so still lurk here - this is a thread like no other!

Where we live is definitely a slower pace than Phoenix, but it's beautiful, everything grows (whether you want it to or not) and although it does get humid, the heat of the valley in summer was way worse to me. We've worked in the yard all summer. The chickens love the environment too...we moved them out here with us (Yeah...we're THOSE kinda people - aka crazy). Savannah is gorgeous, although I'm S of there by about 45 minutes. We do live on the intercoastal, so probably have a more temperate climate than other parts of GA.

Close to amazing fishing on lakes, rivers, the ocean, watersports of all kinds, scuba, close to the Caribbean for last minute cruise deals, etc..

Is anyone interested in going in on a chick order with me  to Ideal poultry?  I have ordered from them a few times before and have been happy with them.  (Yes, I should buy local and I would, except that the whole rooster thing is too hard.  I want sexed pullets.)
We could just pay for our own chicks and then split the shipping costs by number of chicks ordered.
I need them to be shipped on September 24th so I can stick them in with the chicks that will hopefully be hatching that day.
I'll pick them up at the post office and keep them here(Gilbert) that day until you are available to pick them up.

I'm only ordering 4, probably a BR, a BA and an EE and something else but you can order whatever they have available for Sept. 24th.

Message me if you are interested.

Possibly, I looked & most of what I would like is not available.. Seriously like more than half of their stock. I even looked into white layers. All of our Golden Marans are not progressing.. Wheaten have no air sac, & ice bars are hard to tell.. I will need some chicks around that time so when are you placing the order?

If they let the "good guys" fly their colors then the Hells Angels will say its not fair because they are good guys to. Then next the Mongols and every other good guy motorcycle club and then the bars/business' are back to square one where they are sitting on a ticking time bomb. Business' dont want trouble they want to run a profitable business. Why can't the colors be taken off for a little bit and you can just be Bob, Rick, John or whoever you are?

I don't know about 702, but I don't wear colors. I just like to ride my bike. Makes no difference with the cops, though, you are presumed guilty until proven innocent (rotsa ruck, pal).

If you are 45-minutes south of Savannah, you must be in McIntosh or Glynn County. It's not that it wasn't pretty, or that I didn't love the ocean. I miss the ocean. I've lived within 10 miles of the ocean for most of my life. I didn't have a good support system. I'm a horse person and the facilities and trainers are almost zilch there. It's was just very hard to make social headway ... for me anyhow. Maybe if I had been happier in my marriage and my husband didn't work so much, I would've been more content. He was a sous chef at Sea Island Resort. Also, some pretty bad things happened to some of my animals, which I think was the misdeeds of some of my students.
