Arizona Chickens

We just had about an inch of rain dump on us in the last 20 minutes!

Well eggs to babies should happen this week :jumpy   - right about the time we might get crazy rain again!  I'm attempting to design something that is much better at taking care of a broody and her brood while still giving the broody some freedom.  Yesterday momma got out to take a dust bath and eat some greens that I dumped in a pile for the kids to kick through.  A little to eat and drink then back on her nest.:love     I will be most anxious if we get big rains!

Girl we are right there with you.. I am hoping for at least 3 out of 7.. Some were duds.. Tihs next hatch is under Cheryl the silkie, her 3rd or 4th time this year. I can't keep track

Oh no!!! Where are you!!

We're way north of Phoenix, North east of Cordes Junction. I was shocked, the skies just opened up and buckets of water fell. Then it was over. Lol!

You are kidding me!! I just had a neighbor leave, he helped plug up the gaping hole from the neighbors house. It would send tons of water onto our property..

OMG such cute kitties!

We have a feral momma cat living under one of our IBC totes behind my DH's workshop. She lost a newborn in the big storm that hit, it must have drowned. I have no idea how many other kittens might be under there.

What I'm worried about is her having another litter after this one. Can't they get pregnant again before the current litter is weaned? I'm not sure if I can get her and all the kittens trapped. She is so wild she won't go near humans or dogs, which is good for her as my dogs would kill her, as well as a wayward kitten. I assume the kittens can be altered as well if I can catch them? It's nice not having roof rats or pack rats around, the cat must be keeping them away. Do feral cats leave chickens alone? I worry about my girls free ranging.

yes cats can get pregnant before they wean the kittens and anything over 4 lbs can be fixed. some vets even smaller

...I just bought a medium animal trap, so that way I can get ahold of any feral cats or new kittens are born and get them used to being friendly so people have a chance to be adopted! If you need me to at some point in time, I might be able to loan you for a few days the trap. I just took it out of the box tonight, & I'm still figuring out how to make it work, lol. Harbor Freight has them for I think $20.00 on Sale & with the weekly or online coupon,
-20% off, & it ends up being maybe 15. ( medium sized trap)

*I believe they can get pregnant while they are still nursing their babies.

*it depends on the feral cat if it would leave the chickens alone, most of feral cats don't bother my chickens. My chickens usually are pretty loud and aggressive if they try to mess with them. Mine don't go after the chickens though, at least the ones I have live outside I hope that helps! so just keep in mind to make sure your flock is strong enough to handle any aggressive feral or domesticated cat that might happen to come in the yard. I think with the dogs that you have you should be okay, as I think the dogs would chase the feral cats out or eat them.
