Arizona Chickens

Thanks. I ended up putting off the rehoming because one of the hens I was going to sell decided to go broody (the barnevelder) and I don't want her to go alone later. We've fixed her up in a cooler, vented broody box and have decided to let her hatch some eggs (my teen daughters are really excited) - even though we won't be able to keep the chicks - argh!

We placed 3 Blue/black/splash orp eggs, 4 ameraucana/easter egger? eggs, and 3 welsummer eggs under her. She is doing wonderfully at keeping them covered, so we are hopeful for some chicks.

I remember picking ours out last fall - it's definitely fun to come home with those little cuties. How many chicks did you get? Do you know what kind? I was there today (the stock shop) picking up a fly trap and of course, I always peek at the chicks even though I can't buy anymore now. It looked like they had buff orpingtons, production reds, barred rocks, and araucana/easter eggers in the big round tub (I may have missed a breed).

As for your shelter - I don't have know anything about the material you're talking about. Is it possible to keep the coop under a shade tree during the summer? They will probably not want to be in the sun at all, till it cools off again.

That is where we got them..right out of that big round tub. We got one that looks almost yellow could be that buff one you mentioned and two were a nice redish brown might be the production red, all have decorative wings. I have another person in the shop I work (Im a hairdresser) and he is getting his this week. He thought that green sun filter would do the trick. as he has used it before. I will want to cover the whole pen with it. Cant believe how lulu I am now that I am mothering chicks. My husband will help me with the pen today or tomorrow. Cant wait to see them in the grass.

Yep - based on what they carry, it sounds like you have a buff orpington and 2 production reds - we love our production red - she's boss of the flock and aggressive to newcomers (chicken newcomers), but thinks she's our pet. Buff orpingtons are large, gentle chickens.

I was looking for standard size breeds and was hoping to find eggs locally. I found a lady that sells her eggs on ebay and lives in Wickenburg ( e-bay name is: teresac928 ) . She has been working on a 'blue partridge' color ameraucana for 4 years and almost all of her chicks in the last two years have been 'blue partridge'. It's not a standard ameraucana color and even though she is working towards blue eggs, the eggs were still green, so I'm not sure if that makes them EEs, but either way, I'm still happy. She was very nice and easy to meet up with - the 10 eggs were laid in the last couple days before I received them, so hopefully we will have a successful hatch.

I have been over run with calls today since the Arizona Republic ran the ad today about backyard chickens. The article even mentioned BYC!!!! I should write them and thank them for the free advertisement.
