Arizona Chickens

Tofu--and what am I supposed to do when my FIL (who lives down the block) or my MIL (who lives with us part-time) asks, "Hey, were did you put that XXXX I got you?"

You are trying to get me in trouble.

How about, "A good friend needed chicken art for her business, and the one you got me was such a good one, I knew it would bless her project and that you would be happy to know that I had loaned it out for a good cause."

Seriously, if you don't bite the bullet, you are going to be over run. DH will have to add a new room on to the house just for the gifts you don't want that you are keeping...and that will take away room from the yard for the live birds!

You could also tell them that you are rotating them out every so often so you still "see" them when they are on display.

Or, let them know that people are much more important to you than things and you enjoyed it for a time but have passed it on to a friend in need to make room for the next thoughtful gift they bring you.

Here is my poor little guy. He doesn't like to put weight on his foot, he just keep it up like this. Nothing is swollen or any larger then the other leg. The parents never had problems with anything and all of the other ducklings are doing great. So of course I had to get a special one since things were going to good.

I have an aunt who loves to collect old metal milk jugs. Since she likes those everyone thinks she like cows too, which she doesn't. Now she has a small shed she keeps all of the cow things that people get her. When people come over and asks where there gift is tells them she just switched around her decor for a change.

It cracks me up since I actualy live two houses down and I know she never has any of that cow stuff up. But she gets away with it since she does change around her nick nacks every now and then.

So ALL 3 of my BOs are broody!

How come I keep hearing it's hard to get a broody hen, and I can't seem to STOP? The first one has 9 new babies (SLWs, Delawares, and Light Brahmas) And I gave the second one a mix of 10 eggs (EE, RSL, and some surprises)

Today my last one went broody out of nowhere-- I didn't see it coming at all! She is my top hen, and boy is she MEAN on that nest! I tried the dunking her in water trick... which only succeeded in making her scream and squawk while running around the yard until I gave in and let her go back to her nest. (I have an HOA-- maybe she knew she would win if she made a little noise) If she's going to sit on shavings for a month anyway I may as well let her raise some babies, so I guess I'll take half of Bluebell's eggs and give them to Rose... and that means no eggs for us for the next few months.

In 3 or 4 months I'm going to be overrun with chickens, (24 if they all make it) and I can only keep 10 MAX. I'll sell the extra hens, but does anybody know someone in the Gilbert/Queen Creek area that will process the roos for me? I'm going to have at least 5, and maybe quite a few more. I'm all for raising and eating my own chickens, but I'm not ready to bite the bullet and do it myself yet. I've heard in some places you can have chickens processed for $2 each... but I have no idea around here.

Thanks in advance!

ok dumb question... ho reliable is a broody hen? If you cant seem to get her off the golfballs is she more reliable than an incubator or could she quit when she feels she has set long enough even if the eggs still need a few more days? ??

Thanks for he input

It depends on the hen. My OEGBs both tried twice, same with my BB. It wasnt until try 3 the one OEGB was successful, but I gave her, the sizzle, and the BB chicks.

THEN the sizzle decided to go broody a second time this year, and she hatched them out like a champ. She's not even a year old! I am a proud grandma.

macamanamana- ok-- had a spelling moment: I don't know of any "professional" processors in the valley, except for that weird Aremenian taxadermy place in Awatuhkee that chardes $12 a bird. You are better off suckering, I mean asking nicely, a friend to help you.

I love cow stuff too...LOL

I think it all depends on the hen. My GLW has been sitting STRONG for 5 weeks so far. She went broody out of the blue and then it took me about 3 weeks to get her fertile eggs to hatch. In the mean time I had a broody duck so I took 2 eggs from her put them under my GLW. My silkie eggs came in so I put those under her with the duck eggs. She hatched those duck eggs this weekend and I took away the ducks once they hatched. She is still sitting strong on those silkie eggs even after she hatched out those duck eggs. She is one dedicated mamma, poor thing. So if you get a broody like her then they will go to the ends of the earth and back to hatch anything you put under them.

On the other hand I have a friend who has some mutt chickens and this one will sit for about 2 weeks then be done.
