Arizona Chickens

I gave her the chicks last night and this morning she left the nest. Maybe because I gave her chicks. I candled the remaining eggs and it looks like 4 had done something but, looking at the candle pics on BYC, I'm pretty sure all had quit. I guess it's a good thing I got her some chicks.

I got a BR, BO, EE, and a PR. I got them at Mesa Feed Barn and they had just come in. I picked the BR with the most black on it's legs, the PR that had faint tiny tail feathers and the most chipmunky EE so I'm feeling good that they are pullets. I don't know anything about how to tell sex of Buffs, though and they only had a couple so I'm crossing my fingers that I didn't get any cockerels this time. I still have a 14 week old BA cockerel I'm probably going to have to do something with.

My chicks have arrived! They are absolutely adorable. I talk to them and they come running to see what I'm doing. I turned on the heat lamp because it was 90 back there and adjusted it so it's only shining on a tiny spot.

No losses 27 arrived. There are a couple that are a bit weaker but they were eating and drinking after me showing them a few times. I'll keep an eye on them and the temp so it doesn't get too hot for them.

Congratulations, you are off on a fantastic chicken adventure!

Well, we have 4 little chicks waiting to meet her tonight. Our coop will be a little over-full, but I added a new roost so they should be fine. Since we've had to go gluten-free we have to use lots more eggs in our baking so we need lots of chickens. (I knew there would be an upside to going gluten-free)

We got an EE, BR, PR, and a BO. I'll leave the eggs for her until she decides to leave them, though.
Which day did your chicks hatch? Are they both getting tail feathers already? That's a very good sign of pullets!

Gluten free!!?? What a bummer. All the really tasty stuff is glutenous.

I wish you good luck, it's a hard adjustment. We haven't had anything with gluten (at least not intentionally) since April 2013. Don't miss it much at all now. Well, I guess I really do miss Rocco's pizza.

I can't eat wheat and I have to watch my dairy and corn. Chocolate gives me hives. I'm basically eating a paleo diet. Loads of fruit, veggies, meat, eggs, etc. One daughter is a vegan, the other vegetarian, then three meat eaters and me. Talk about a challenge to cook for. I love Yuma's farmers markets which open the end of October.
My kitten wants to eat the babies. Definitely need to get my brooder covered so he can't get to them. For now I'm making sure he is not in there. I'm a paranoid chicky mama.

We're all paranoid chicken mamas at first! YIPPEE on your chicks! I kept an old framed screen over my brooder box which was a large rubber tote from Lowes.

I have totes with lids but I wanted to give them more room. I'm gonna get something to cover the kiddie pool I'm using so he can't get in and they can't get out.

Greetings and welcome to our thread! Your dog looks like it could have come from the same litter as mine. 'Cept everywhere yours is black, mine is now white. Here's an old pic of her: '
