Arizona Chickens

Placing young birds outside is the hardest thing for me to do. I worry CONSTANTLY about them, even dreaming about for the first few nights. When I moved my Australorps outside to the coop I was convinced I wake up the next morning to four dead birds. Instead, they're thriving. I'm working on conditioning my Barred Rocks and Silkies right now. I moved them from the warm office in my house, to the chilly garage with very little heat supplied by a light + allowing them outside with no heat lamp during the day (contained in their brooder). Tomorrow I'm moving them to the coop in the morning so they can spend the day out there with the Australorps, and probably adding a heat light and letting them sleep there tomorrow night. By the end of the week the lamp will be gone and they'll be on their own...and I won't sleep.

I know! I keep looking out the window (they're completely covered in blankets so its not like I can see anything) I want to go outside and pop open the top just to check, but I don't wanna wake them up. I was thinking about putting a heat lamp up, but that would require two extension cords, and I don't wanna accidentally burn my house lol but the coop is covered in three big blankets and a cement bord on each side to keep the wind at ba, and they have Frizzell, I think they're going to be Ok, but I'll always worry lol

@CityFarm Here is a picture of one of the three EE mixes. She is the broody mom for my NN FM first generation. Other were born but the moms crushed them and it don't matter because they did't make the grade as they did not have the dark skin like I am aiming to make. Dark skinned Naked neck chick.
Oh I love seeing the photo's! What color egg's does she lay?

So, It's that time of year again. I went down to our local park and picked up a coffee can full of black acorns. Not sure of the exact species, but these are from a desert climate adapted white oak tree. I started some last year, and the one that has made it this far is over 24" tall now. Not sure who has the seed box right now, but when it makes it's way back to Tucson, I'll throw a bunch of acorns in.

We do.. @Sill & I plan on coming there on a Friday, maybe next week.. We need to look at the layout & time between each place. What is your schedule on Fridays ? Along with @Gallo del Cielo & @a little chiken

We will make it all work, i will text you.We will leave the seed box there, it's been down here for a while. So of anyone would like some seeds, or would like to add, please let us know soon..

Yeah, me and a little chiken both live on the west side of Tucson, I am about 10 miles north of her.

I went to the the poultry show at the Pima Country Fairgrounds...my first ever... this past weekend and found out that one of our business acquaintances is actually the guy who organizes and puts on the show and is a high-ranking poultry breeder. He's now my mentor, and he keeps laughing at me and saying, "They're chickens! Stop babying them! They'll be healthier if you encourage their wild, ancestral blood to flourish." I know he's right...but...but...they're still my babies.
