Arizona Chickens

I had a really nice visit today with @CityFarm and @Sill who came down from Tempe, first to visit Gallo and then over to me. They were not able to coordinate with some of the other folks in Tucson, unfortunately. However because of that, the SEED BOX is now in my possession and I have a lot to add to it and hope to pass it on to @cyborg or @MagicChicken at the next poultry meeting, so I hope at least one of you is there to take it.

I'll be there. I have a bunch of acorns to put in the box, and some Mexican papaya seeds.

Hi, everyone, it has been way to long. I am back in the valley after being gone with my fai,ly for thanksgiving. I do not know how long I will be able to hold this Wifi signal. I'm paying for it bit I do not get a signal 80% of of the time. I will lose it in the middle of reading and not get it back. I wonder if there is anything I can do to strengthen a wifi signal so I can use it when ever I want. Any suggestions?

I have been to Core about my shoulder, I am going to have to give up my girls for about a yr, I have to get my shoulder to heal first. Letting them in and out is tearing it up.

. I do not know what I am going to do with out them. I will be here longer then I planned do to it and other tests and stuff. So I will be enjoying them for now. Ethel begs for food, I think of other animas but not chickens. I cook outside most of the time, and she is right there at the pen wall, giving me the eye.

Sweetie, the Silkie is the usual comic. She has been the introduction to a lot of conversation. Sadly I do not think they will miss me and the moving around.

I hope everyone is doing well.
Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I wonder if someone can figure out a way to make it easier on you to get the girls where they need to be?

Have any of you had any issues with your hens developing Fowl Pox? I'm a newbie owner bought two six month old hens from a organic farm about a week ago and i (think) one of my girls has Fowl Pox. She was perfectly healthy until yesterday. I haven't noticed any mosquitos around in the last few weeks but they were terrible in the summer. Just wondering if its going around here.
Yes one of mine has the dry type. The mosquitoes can be hard to spot especially since they mostly come out at night. I saw them in my nest boxes during the day! How sneaky is that? I put lemon grass clippings in the nest boxes and haven't seen any there since.

Pretty!

Whether needed or not, I use a filtered mask when I play around with chicken litter. And where I live their litter does not get very wet but I'd rather be cautious.
I wear a dust mask now anytime I work with animal litter or my compost. It's just a good idea not to get that stuff into your lungs.

I currently buy the big sky organic feed but am looking at trying Modesto. I keep hearing positive results from people using it saying their layers are producing more consistently and their meat birds are finishing bigger. Along with less waste because its pellets and crumbles. The problem is they charge a flat rate for shipping a pallet no matter how full it is. So if anyone wants to try some of their products let me know and I can get you a product and price list. They have some other options such as 25lb bags on some stuff, food grade DE, and nesting box herbs just to name a few.
Depending on the price I might be interested. Is there a web site where their products are listed? The nesting box herbs sound interesting.

BTW my critters have been loving the Omega 3 forage blend grasses I got with you.

Some of it is even starting to bloom! I have no idea what the plant with the white flowers is.

I had a great time visiting today with @Gallo del Cielo and @desertmarcy . I had a serious case of tilapia envy at @Gallo del Cielo 's house and @desertmarcy had some heritage turkeys I didn't even knew existed, beautiful! Thank you both! And thanks to @CityFarm for getting the seed box to Tucson and doing all the driving.

Glad you two had a good trip. Wish I could have gotten together with you. Maybe I will actually get up your way one of these days!

@desertmarcy - I may not be at the next poultry club meeting. I'll give you a holler next time I'm going to be over on your side of town.

@Sill and @CityFarm, sorry I missed out on the Meetup today, got stuck fixing the GF's car. It had a broken spring on the fuel door, and was in serious need of some TLC (and some gas)!

Wow yours came in really well! You can go to http://www.modestomilling.com/ for products. If you want to pm me your email I can send you a price sheet.

That is correct, she is another happy user.

Yes, Modesto's feed has worked out for me. One of the big advantages to me is, I can get it delivered here. Shipping varies with the price of gas. My last order, shipping was $2.36 per bag. That was with a 100 bag order. The one thing I don't like is, like most feed companies, they don't make a really high protein pellet. I like to feed around 20% protein for my chickens and the only way I can get that is to mix a 17% pellet and a 22% crumble. My adult birds prefer pellets. They will custom mill, but the minimum order is 3 tons and I can't store that much, or use that much up in 3 months (my personal limit). I am stretched to store 2-1/2 tons, which is two full pallets. Both my chicken's and turkey's feather quality looks good on their feed, and hatchability/chick vigor has been good as well, which is another indicator of good diet.
