Ooooo, Mexican papaya. I guess we will ave to make it down there for that!! Or save some for us?

Never heard of Mexican Papaya?¿ Is it good?¿ Can chickens eat it or any of it?¿

OK, CF, I put some seeds aside for you. Mexican papaya is about the same as Hawaiian papaya, but the Mexican tends to have larger fruit, roughly 2X in size. I suppose chickens would enjoy it if you could sneak some off the table. Papaya seeds are used to make meat tenderizer, so I don't think I'd let them have any of the seeds.

Oh awesome dude you rock!! Meat tenderizer, that's hilarious. Thank you so much I'm totally excited to get them started.

A few on here have told their story about deep litter, the mold can be toxic and deadly to your flock. Along with whoever is cleaning it at the time.. They mentioned how sick they got after.. If I were you I would do more research.

After doing some extensive reading and based on our climate, I think I will go with sand flooring with use of Sweet PDZ. Thanks for info.

our neighborhood is doing a luminary walkthrough, hopefully will get some carolers. Not sure about that just yet. I was going to order a huge amounts of sand for our patio in the front yard and the chicken run/ holiday luminaries. So far looks the best to me.

Could have used some of those for the rooster I cooked the other day. Toughest bird ever. Usually the meat is falling off the bones of my older birds by the time they've been in the pot for 4-5 hours. At four hours I couldn't even get a fork into this guy. He was in the pot for eight hours before I could pick his bones clean.

Might be worth feeding them a papaya seed supplement before I have to process the next batch of older birds

Hello I'm new to the state ( in sierra vista) and had to leave my flock behind when I moved here from Alaska. Looking to start over and figure out what works best here ect

Waaayyyyy different from Fairbanks - where you worried about the cold temp - here the high temps BUT way easier to work with!!! I'm an Alaska girl from Chena Hot Springs Road where we had a small goat dairy with chickens and rabbits. Here I just have a wonderful flock of girls. Sierra Vista is much cooler than where I'm living so it will be easier heat wise. You have many places to get birds depending on what you want - I personally have liked getting older pullets - close to point of lay. I've done the hatch thing, the baby feed store chick thing but from a dollar and cents point of view the older bird is the best buy. This site has many who are working with heritage birds. DesertMarcy is probably closest to you and I know she is thinning her flock a bit. BTW WELCOME!!!

1000

We have not lost a bird to heat yet. We have tons of shade, open area that is screened & a fan for the extra hot day's 111' & above. Sometimes misters. Frozen treats, blocks of ice for the 115' day's..
Plant pot's or shallow containers for them to stand in.
Keep us posted on what breeds you get..

I had a great time with @CityFarm and @Sill last friday. It's so great to put faces with names. Thank you both so much for the duck and quail eggs. My daughter shrieked with joy at the cuteness of the quail eggs and asked if we could incubate them. She said she'd also like them as tiny little fried eggs. Again, the cuteness. Your time here was all too short and I wish we had more, I'm sure we could have gabbed for hours. The fig cuttings were Black Mission, good luck with the rooting. If they don't take, let me know and I'll get you some more when I prune it this winter.

Welcome to our thread and to AZ! Think massive ventilation and shade when designing your chicken enclosure. Look at the coops on "My Coop" page for the members here and ask questions. We love to help.
