Arizona Chickens

That was me! Your schnauzer with the cropped ears and my boy look like twins-- I actually had to do a double-take. So glad it's working out! My dogs hang with the adult girls even unsupervised now. I've seen them get their butts kicked my my top hen, so I'm no longer worried. I was even shocked to find out they didn't bother my new chicks! They were interested of course, but Broody gave them both a scolding and they stay far away now. I'd never let them near the chicks unsupervised, but it's nice to know if the dogs got out things would probably be fine.

I thought they looked a lot alike also, but mine is a female and doesn't have cropped ears(must be a trick of the light.) I'm not as worried about her with the chickens. She has a healthy respect for who is the boss.
The other one is bigger than the normal size for a min. schnauzer(26 lb.) and not quite as true to "schnauzer personality". She was a rescue, and while she's a great dog and we love her dearly, she's a little sneaky and knows exactly when she can do whatever she wants to.

That's exactly what I was worried about - them getting out and something happening before I could stop it. Now, at least, I can relax a little.

We actually used to breed my schnauzers... you didn't buy her from a breeder about 5 years ago in Gilbert did you? That would be crazy if she was one of our pups-- we only had 3 litters so what are the chances? That's funny-- my boy thinks he's a retriever. He doesn't care about anything but chasing the ball. It's my girl who I worried about with the chickens... but when the first one turned around and pecked her on the nose she decided chickens weren't so fun after all. LOL.

I just called every feed store in the phone book and found one that just got in a bunch of chicks!

She said that they don't have silkies but they had a long list of other breeds. I think at this point I will just go and buy three and put them under my GLW. My poor broody, I took away all of her eggs hoping she would quit

yea right she sat there in that nest box and waiting for the other gals to go and lay an egg then she took them.

The feed store has wyandottes, australorps, RIRs, sex links, BR, and brahmas. I think I am going to go with the brahams. Does anyone know any tricks to sexing them (besides vent sexing) can they be feather sexed?

That is what I was thinking so I asked the lady. She said they just got some in today so by tomorrow that would make them 3 days or so old. I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

I have a light brahma. Sweet enough and beautiful, but doesn't lay as well as my RIRs and BR. The Brahma lays 4-5/wk and the others take a break about every 11th day.
(just in case production is important to you.)
Good luck!

ETA - sex links are, of course easy to sex

I did mine during the day-- because I didn't have a heat lamp or anything for the chicks and I could only pick them up in the morning. She took them great-- I just stuck them underneath her while she was lying down with her other chicks.
It did take about a day for the chicks to really understand what to do-- but after 24 hours they were following her everywhere and burrowing underneath her feathers for warmth.

I think it would actualy be nice to have a chicken that lays a little fewer then my hens now. We get 6 a day, sometimes they take a break on day 7 and sometimes on day 8. My hens now GLW, SLW, BA, and EE are just laying machines. I always read and heard that brahmas were sweet.

Sexlinks are great chickens but I just don't like the redish/brown color chickens.

I did mine in the day also. We put the chicks where momma could see them and slowly they went up to her and burrowed under. We tried at night first...that didn't go so well for our set up, so when we tried the next day, they had been near each other already.

You guys are getting me so excited.

Tucson Tofu~ I emailed Pat and she said she did have a bunch of chicks. Thanks for the recommendation, she didn't say what breeds she has yet. Do you know?

I live an hour and 45 min+ away from the feed store or Pat so I guess we will see how it goes tomorrow. If I have to drive all over and around Tucson I will come home with some chicks.

That's why it's so great that there are so many kinds of chickens. Everyone has different reasons for having them.
We can only have a few(6 right now), so production is pretty important to me with a family of 5.

P.S. I have pictures of mine on my page if you want to see them.

Hey, did you see my post a few pages back? Your dog looks so much like mine and you're from the same city... now you have me wondering if she was one of our puppies! We bred ours 5-6 years ago in Gilbert... they were AKC, and dad is Ben (MacsBrawnyBentley)

I doubt it, but they look so much alike!
