Arizona Chickens

I don't have any expert knowledge, but I am incubating in a foam bator right now and my humidity is around 12-20% I put water in there but not everyday. I candled yesterday and everything is growing. Not sure how I will increase humidity when it comes to lock down time, It doesn't seem to matter how much water I put in the channels. I guess I will just have to put some dishes of water in there or something. Kinda flying by the seat of my pants on this hatch. I am just glad that I am getting some development. I cooked the last eggs I had in. I get to go through the learning curve again with my grandpas cabinet incubator here in a few days too. hahahah.

Try putting a wet washcloth in the bottom but that cloth must be kept wet. Sometimes it helps. The other trick is to limit the air flow by closing or reducing ventilation holes.

As flower said, close some holes. If it has 2 large ventilation holes as most styrofoams do, close 1, you open the other on lockdown day. Get yourself one of those heavy duty straws like the ones used for refillable water bottles, most stores carry them next to the water bottles like Target or Walmart, and a funnel with an end that will fit the straw. You'll use that during lockdown. In the meantime, you want to fill the channels with water as warm or warmer than the temp of the bator. When I was using a styrofoam bator I would put 4 small mason jars inside as well. I also used an aluminum knitting needle to enlarge the holes allowing the straw to fit, you want to be careful if there's a washer and screw near the hole holding the heating element in place.
I have never successfully dry hatched Marans eggs and was told from a few in the Marans club it was because they are a swamp bird.

I have so many things I want to try. Fodder, mealworms, BSL/composter, garden, and Duckweed. I have a blue kiddie pool that I use for everything. I think it would make a great duckweed or azolla growing pool. =D Now to just find some. Since I don't live in Phoenix, I might try ordering from gardenpool.org

you are in yuma right? As a resource, I drive to yuma every couple months, so if you ever need help with something from Phoenix, I can probably help you. Every school vacation I drive my kid to and from yuma to meet up with his father from San Diego.
@aviddamy I can give you some duck weed to start with if @houdiniduck can drive it out to you. There's not too much now because of the cool temps but there's enough for a start. It expands rapidly with the warmer weather.

We will be driving out there for spring break. Would have to look it up, but I can drop it off when I come if you want.

said sprouting seeds is a good way to get the greens they crave.  This time of year weeds are abundant.  I scour my alley, the neighbors' yards, anyplace that might have unsprayed weeds.  I pull them up and give the chickens the entire plant, they even pick at the roots.  Most weeds are very nutritious and are eaten quickly.

I too do this EXCEPT this year.  Getting over all this surgery has really taken a toll on me and I still am getting what I call jelly legs so I don't have much stamina when it comes to pulling up the weeds that they love.  I was always with a bin in my car so I could stop along side the road and pull weeds - especially if they had seed on them!! - and my girls have always loved them.   I do beg borrow or steal a flake of alfalfa once in a while too.  They love that as well!

Girl, Heath is so important. Praying for a fast recovery!

...speaking of Marans and since they seem to be auto sexing... (correct? ) I would be very interested...now that I only seemed it hatch one out of that last batch. I think what I did is trying to hatch maybe an egg that wasnt fertile, which is not likely or I had too long of a cooling period in the incubator. :hit

Well folks, ...I just have an orphan it seems. My poor chick. Anybody selling turkey chicks???

Thursday I got to see @City farm and she helped me candle a couple of my eggs that were my leghorns. They didn't even seem to have developed, unfortunately, but it was sure nice to see her!
Nice getting to know you East Valley BYC'ers! :thumbsup
